We got robbed a couple of years ago. We were in the house at the time and the back door was closed and unlocked. They crept in while we were watching TV and the kids were asleep and stole the keys to my mum's car (the police later found the car weeks later, totally written off) I had borrowed at the time, some cash that was in the kitchen and my husband's Iphone. The police said they were most likely watching us from the garden in the dark. Still gives me the chills thinking about it. :(
My mum and dad actually have their front door ajar in the Summer "to let air flow through" in spite of what happened to us!!
    I feel your frustration OP!

I can't not loke my door, not since i went out to work as a student and came back to find my laptop has been nicked as someone had left the door unlocked, plus another house we lived in got burgled twice when people left windows open, so for me it is a very alien concept, luckily the door to my shared house has an automatic lock on it, but i still lock my room whenever i leave it, in fact i lock it when i'm in it too :o i may be slightly paranoid...

I'm not sure someone staying eighteen months qualify as guests.
Sounds like the parents have done the couple a massive favour .
I if the OP is that concerned it's probably better to move out now as the parents have made it clear it is their home and their rules.
No one is forcing them to live there after all.

If a homeowner wants to be stupid in their own house. That is their choice.

It's all very well saying that but surely they have some responsibility to the security of their guests and guests belongings? If my parents acted like that and my stuff was stolen with no insurance I would be fuming due to their stupidity. They might have done this in the 'old days' but the recent homeowner attack in Wimbledon shows that those days are long gone.

It takes no time just to keep the front door on a Yale type latch which is adequate while people are at home.

Oh and OP, with regards to your bank account being robbed, if you really want to do secure online banking, do it on a Mac.

  • Our doors only get locked when I go to bed- and fairly frequently get left unlocked if someone is just nipping out to the train station etc. Next door neighbour once left the front door gaping open as they rushed off to the airport to go away for 6 months...it was two days later that we noticed, and locked it.
I worked in home care for quite a while- and a good half of the people on my round left doors unlocked.
