OS Daily Sunday 17th August 2014

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine too.

    Morning all :)

It's always good to get back to your own bed when you've been away :) This time I've found that it's also good to get back to OS ways :D

We got back to find a huge crack in the inside pane of our double glazed window  No idea how it's happened but it will cost a fortune to replace :( OH is not happy and blamed the kids but I know it wasn't cracked before we went. Needless to say the atmosphere here last night was not a pleasant one. On top of that, the friend who wanted to borrow money is now ignoring us. I'm mixed between hurt and annoyance over this. I think she has been really rude and is behaving appallingly but I'm hurt as I thought we were friends :(

    Anyway, back to OS :)

Today I'm going to try making Millie's Cookies:

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=33376573&postcount=52

My lot love them but they are so expensive. I'm going to use choc chips and smarties in today's batches.

We are having a roast chicken dinner today (chicken and salad for me as I gained weight on holiday :o ) but I'm also going to cook some bolognese and beef in red wine stew for the freezer.

I have loads of ironing to get through but will need to pace myself on that one otherwise I will not be any good for anything

Hope you all have a super Sunday :)

:hello: everybody - weather-wise, bit of an odd morning here. It's raining onto the windows, we've got sunshine with shadows and clouds are 'scudding' across the sky - so it's quite windy as well :rotfl:. Wish it would make up its mind!

    :T for starting today's thread, donny-gal.

HShellobee2.gif and welcome to caz - and anybody else who might be 'lurking'. Please take the plunge to say 'hello' to us - we don't bite, honest :).

HSarmhugs_9780.gif to all who aren't well, struggling with work and family relationships, debt/finances, fighting 'old black dog' - or just 'need or want one'.

    HSbirthdayck.gif and HSthteasmileyf.gif, coffee.gif or HScocktail.gif to anybody who's celebrating today.

jlhmd666 - Sorry to hear about your problems since you returned from your holiday. Your 'friend' is definitely in the wrong - but do you think she could be embarrassed that she'd had to ask to borrow money ................? Is there anyway of checking if the window could possibly have been broken by 'external pressure' of some kind - it might at least get your OH off the kid's backs :undecided. Enjoy your cookies - sounds like you're all going to be in need of some 'comfort food' ((((hugs)))).

My long-expected great-nephew arrived yesterday evening - Samuel James. Mum, baby - and Dad - all doing well :j! I need to get a shifty on with the blanket that I'm crocheting for him. Mum had done 'the foundation row' and got no further with it .............. so it's also 'for her'.

Yesterday turned into quite a lazy day - it was too cold to spend much time in the garden, so I spent most of it on the baby blanket :).

Finally watched a dvd that I've had 'sitting there' for nearly a year - The Way Back with Ed Harris and Colin Farrell. I'd read the book around 40yrs ago and loved it, so really wanted to see the film. I know that it wasn't 'very well received' at the time, but I enjoyed it.

Checked out the CD's that arrived to use for Mum's funeral. Was worried that the 'live version' of 'Green Green Grass of Home' might just have 'screaming', 'audience participation' or 'applause' on it - but it's perfectly fine. Must have been recorded directly through his microphone to block out external sounds. The Il Divo 'Amazing Grace' is beautiful - the final verse sounded a bit loud through my PC speakers, but maybe it won't quite so bad within the Crematorium. I need to go to see younger sis with them tomorrow morning and then I'll go up to the Crem to hand them in - they want them 'a few working days in advance' and it's the only chance I'll get this week.

    Plans for today include -
    • Another coffee1.gif and toast/marmalade in a few minutes.
    • The rain has now stopped, so there could be some more gardening on the agenda :D.
    • Pie/Pots/Sprouting Brocc/Roasted Parsnips for evening meal - pots are SmartPrice and the rest are all whoopsied :j!
    • More crocheting this evening.

I'm off to put that kettle back on again and get dressed - would like to make a reasonably early start on the garden jobs so I can 'knock off' around mid afternoon :D.

speak again later - IF I've not dozed off - luv Lilyplonk xxx

    Morning Everyone

Not like me to be up before the rest of you, but as I was thought I would start us off for the day.

Have a bit of a tickley cough which I think disturbed us, as normally we only see one 7 o'clock I a day. Sat here now both on our pads, the art of conversation, eh! I have a serious case of CBA'd at the moment, and need to give myself a good kick up the rear, and get myself moving. On that subject, we have decided that we need to start looking about moving to nearer DS & DDIL, not on their doorstep by any means, but maybe within an hour of travelling, not the 3-4 hours it takes us now. They say they want to stay in North London, unless a job comes up in some exotic place. Would like it to be village more than town, as that is what we are used to, we are also used to a very quiet area, especially at night, animal noises excluded. To achieve this with the property prices, it would mean selling Spain too, which is a shame, but we have had 12.5 years of it, so must not be greedy. We will still have the caravan of course, so we could go with that. We have been in this place since we were married, so have a large amount of decluttering to attempt. We have no urgent time scale in mind, we are getting a. "Free" valuation in Monday to get a guide on the value of this. One of biggest problems will be finding something suitable with space for the caravan, and a garage large enough to get a car in. We don't really want to out it into storage, and DH is dead against that, but it has be kept as an option. We would also like to stay detached (3 bed detached bungalow ATM), but may have to compromise there too. While we have smashing neighbours at the moment, we have very little family nearby that we actually see on a regular basis, and many of our friends are far and wide, so don't feel we will lose any of them, as we will be constantly out and about with the caravan. Any ideas of suitable places welcome, especially those who don't demand the highest costs.

Elona So pleased you had a lovely day out.

LW. Lovely to see you popping in

I hope Jackie-0 and family are having a lovely time on the IofW and that it is a bit warmer and drier down there too.

    Welcome Caz :hello:

I'm also going to make a cooked dinner today, bought some veggies, as we have been on BBQ's, salads, etc., for weeks!!

((Hugs)), Spoons, Positive Vibes all round. Take care everyone. DG

How would I check that the window was broken by external pressure please, Lily? The crack is on the inside pane but it looks like the crack is facing outwards rather than being on the side facing inwards if that makes sense.

Congratulations on the arrival of Samuel James :)

You've chosen some lovely songs for your mom's funeral :)

  • Good Morning everyone, grey and breezy here this morning, much cooler than yesterday but not raining so all in all quite pleasant. He Who Knows is off to DD1 at lunchtime and the Dockling and I will have a few days to ourselves so I can get all the little jobs done that need the house in peace to me!!!

Lovely thing happened yesterday, we gave some of our blackberry glut to our pub landlords dad along with some of the tomato and cucumber glut, He Who Knows got a free pint and I got a lovely big jar of gooseberry jam made by the chef. We were just pleased to be able to give some away as we have so many and weren't expecting anything back so it's a lovely kind gesture and has made me feel very happy.

Hope that you all have a nice and peaceful day, that poorlies are feeling better and that problems are smaller this morning, Lyn xxx.

Thanks tru She is in the wrong but I'm the one trying to get her to talk and smooth things over yet she is ignoring texts and ignored us when we saw her yesterday :( I'm hurt because I value friendship but clearly she doesn't. OH is of the opinion to just forget about her too but I am hurt over this as it was nothing of our making and she is acting like it's our fault for not giving her money when she wanted it :( I know you're right though :o

  • Good morning all.

Sorry I didn't post yesterday. We left really early, and had a good journey down to Wales from Essex.

We are with my mil till tomorrow. Ds1 stayed here last week.

Yesterday I went to see my best friend. Her children are lovely. Her ds1 is 2.6 and coming on so well. Tbh, he's far more advanced than my ds2. Her baby is 9 months. He was a joy as well.

In the evening my sil came over with her 4 children, they are so lovely. Her youngest is 6 months old and was so snuggly!

So I've had good baby snuggles. And glad to hand them back. I, finished with having babies!

Will see sil later as she's doing a BBQ.

Ds2 has calmed down now. He had a meltdown as was confused when getting up as he didn't do his usual routines that he does at home.

My gran would have been 92 today. So happy birthday Grandma wherever you are. Lots of love, miss you xxxxx

    Take care all

    Love, hugs and spoons xxxx

    Morning All

tru - enjoy the bike ride, just be careful!
jlhmd - Perhaps one of the younger ones will tell you what happened when everything has calmed down. Not what you need when you return home though.
Donny - That's a big decision. I'm sure you have thought through all the pros and cons, it is always nice to be nearer your family. My brother is nearly 500 miles away but he would be the only reason I moved back down south, I don't think I could leave all my friends here. Good luck, we will miss your reports from Spain!

It's raining again and I think it's to get windy later too. Deep joy. The washing will be hanging about the conservatory today. Didn't clean the bathroom yesterday so will tackle that today. We have friends coming for a late lunch, going to roast a ham joint and have a full roast dinner, not had one for months.

Hope you all have a good Sunday, hugs to all, hope the poorlies are feeling better. Take care. XX

jlhmd666 I never explain myself properly, sorry :DIt could be that something else is bothering her that you don't know about, and the money thing happening now is just bad timing and she's (wrongly) taking it out on you. That's why I would leave it for a while. Is she usually like this when she doesn't get her own way? If yes, walk away - if not, you don't want to lose an otherwise good friendship. Hope that makes sense :o
