Just seen this notice on the Bank of Scotland website.
Early morning closure but just in case it runs on or if there is a surge once they open again....be prepared.
We are undertaking essential maintenance to our systems, which will mean you will be unable to use your Bank of Scotland or Halifax debit or Cashpoint cards at any ATM (UK or abroad) between 1:30am and approximately 7am on the morning of Sunday 17th August. In addition, all Bank of Scotland and Halifax ATMs will be unavailable for use during this period.

A bit daft doing it on a Saturday night. I wonder how many will be stranded when the pubs/clubs kick out and people find they can't get cash for a taxi home!0

If people are daft enough to go out with just one single method of paying or access to cash, they are asking for trouble any day of the week.0

Lloyds are too.0

People will still be stuck if their multiple accounts are with:
Halifax
BOS
Lloyds
TSB
Although I have 30+ current accounts I only carry three debit cards and they are with totally separate institutions so I would be fine but a lot of people could be caught out and as others have said it is a strange time for the outage!0 -
Having multiple accounts for back-up purposes involves that you don't have them with the same financial institution. Until recently they were all one.....and now they are two, but still somewhat joined at the hip...
I would also recommend a credit card as a backup. Usual disclaimer...pay off in full each month (and perhaps reduce clubbing if that's a difficult task).0 -

How many people normally go out on their own on a Saturday night? I wouldn't like to do it myself. Personally I go with about 3 - 4 other people and we always go in car with a dedicated alcohol-free driver.0 -

I think you'll find that major banking changes will pretty much always be done on a Saturday night (the very biggest ones might start on the Friday night) as that's when the least banking activity takes place, and in particular there is no overnight batch running for most banks.0 -

How very inconsiderate of those multi-billion-pound organisations, not to give priority to Saturday night revellers who have run out of cash for a taxi or a kebab.0 -

I agree that it is extremely inconsiderate for those working class men and women who work very hard all week, who then go out in the not so big towns with only the occasional cash machine that they be now be now be forced to walk home and put themselves in potential danger.
Look at how many people on a Saturday night who rely on a cash machine to get home. As you say, those multi billion pound organisations are being extremely inconsiderate when you take into account all those working class customers who they try and attract with there cash incentives, but ultimately don't give two hoots. I just hope no more terrible stories come out of this.0
