BT Infinity query

Had the engineer out yesterday morning to install BT Infinity. He put another faceplate on the phone socket then went out to the box in the street a fiddled with that for 15 minutes.
He then returned and said that's me all set.
24 hours later, my download speed has not changed  was told when I placed the order it would be between 78-80 mbps (10x faster than my current broadband) it isn't. It's only 12mbps download

How long after you have had infinity installed did it take for the infinity speed to take effect?

I contacted BT yesterday and got fobbed off with "It takes 24 hours"

The engineer work at the cabinet is when you get physically plugged into the FTTC equipment, so you should see your estimated speeds immediately.

Put your number into https://www.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/main.html and let us know what the results are.

Come back as high 80 lowest 69.1. The wee green box in the street is about 10m away from the house.

So how are you measuring the speed .
Directly from the master socket and Ethernet connection is the most accurate . That will rule out your wiring / equipment .
BT OR normally return to the property and run a speed test after they have been out to the box to changeover .

Did you get the Home Hub 5?

If so, you can log into the web interface (usually 192.168.1.254) and go to Advanced and check your broadband sync speed.

Your admin password can be found on the card you can remove from the back of the HH5.

If that isn't anywhere in the range 69 to 80 (about 72-77 would be reasonable) then something is wrong and I would suggest pressing BT on this.

If I were to take a guess, the wrong copper pair got connected to the FTTC cabinet, leaving you connected to the normal ADSL2+ (standard broadband) service.

They did at first, but not any more.

Did for me last year at the PC .
Are you saying they don't even run their own meter at the MS after switching the pairs ??

The first time I got FTTC, few years ago, the Openreach engineer ran extensive tests from this handheld, and could give me sync speeds etc from that.

Then just under 2 years ago (different property), got Kelly Communications to install it. After they jumpered the pair, they just dial a number from my socket and it runs an automatic test. No further tests performed.

Then just under a year ago (different property again), had an Openreach engineer do a simultaneous line + FTTC provision (if it weren't for the sim-provide it would be Kelly apparently), after the pair was jumpered to the FTTC cabinet, again, just dials a number but doesn't test sync speed or any other tests, just asked for me to run a speedtest.

I did spot a few similar posts on various forums suggesting the same.
  • 1. What package are you paying for ?
    2. What are you using for your speed tests. Most speed test sites are hopeless when you are on very high speeds. Use:- http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/
    3. Or - use a file download site and time the download times yourself.

I think LazyTyper may well have the nail on the head with this one - a botched install. Check the sync as he advised in post #5.

I don't have a BT Hub 5 but I know it handles both VDSL and ADSL - do they both use the same connector or is it possible to get this wrong? I'm not sure there could still be an ADSL signal anyway though if the fibre install was done correctly.

It's a single RJ11 socket for both ADSL and VDSL. Can't really go wrong.
