Not sure if this is the right place to write this but i've been trawling the net all day trying to find some inspiration on what to do with my life. I am married with 2 children and for the last 12 years served as a royal marine commando (40 Cdo RM). Now i'm out i have no idea what to do with myself and i would like to find something to focus on because we still owe just shy of 60k on our mortgage. Even though money isn't a problem at the moment, i'm not used to be this inactive and i need to be doing something.
PS i dont want to go into security or the police as everyone keeps advising me to do.

Thank you for the work you have done on my behalf.
What are your hobbies/interests? Could any be made profitable?0 -
Personal trainer/bootcamp type thing maybe? I'm guessing you must be quite fit and disciplined, so...0

Use your experiences in the military to write a book, perhaps?
Is it the entire security industry you want to avoid? You wouldn't perhaps be open to a consultancy role that didn't include front-line work? Quite a few ex-service personnel have managed to get themselves careers working in film and television as on-set advisers from security consultancy work. You could perhaps offer yourself out to authors/screenwriters etc. as a freelance expert in military procedures. It'd be slow going at first but it's an option while you consider other options and might bring in some supplemental income.0 -
Have you tried sitting quietly with a pen and paper and writting out all the things you like to do and the skills you have. Then see if there is a job or area where you would like to work from that, or a type of job.
You could have a look through job sites putting in a key word and see what jobs come up.
It may be that there is a course you could do that would make your skill relevent to civvy street.
Good luck in whatever you choose0 -
Do whatever takes your fancy and pays the bills?
I heard of a ex-service chauffeur company that employs you to chauffeur the rich & famous round.
There is also a military fitness craze sweeping the country, you could set something like that up and run fitness classes.

Would teaching appeal at all? A lot of the qualities you would have needed to succeed in what you've been doing would be valuable - discipline, teamwork, quick thinking, respect for authority, stamina.
How about training as a paramedic?Life is mainly froth and bubble

I have always enjoyed art and was thinking about taking a course in graphic design or something along those lines but i think that could be very lengthy! Looking at jobs in that field does require experience i dont have.
Glad you said that - I can imagine people want to pigeonhole you based on what you were doing previously (happens to anyone who changes careers to a greater or lesser degree).
Roughly where in the country are you? It may have a bearing.0 -

I could teach PE. I do like sport and could teach that well. PE was also the only A i got in my GCSE's. How long would it take to become a PE teacher?0
