Wouldn't be too certain. Phil Spencer wouldn't really give anything too detailed away, but the only thing he really confirmed is that he hasn't bought the Tomb Raider franchise in it's entirety:

"When people want me to say, can you tell us when or if it's coming to other platforms, it's not my job," Spencer said. "My job is not to talk about games I don't own. I have a certain relationship on this version of Tomb Raider, which we announced, and I feel really good about our long term relationship with Crystal and Square.
"I get the reaction I see. If I'm a PlayStation person all of a sudden I feel like, the franchise has gone. I didn't buy the IP. I didn't buy the studio. It's not mine. Where this thing will go over time, just like Dead Rising or Ryse, we'll see what happens with the game. I don't own every iteration of Tomb Raider."

OK, it sounds like it will possibly end up on PS4/PC in the long run yes, but I'd be surprised if it happens within 12 months of the 2015 release date.

If it had gone to Sony and I was on the other side of the fence right now I'd be pretty miffed...

Phil Spencer is employed by Microsoft and Microsoft have just waved however many millions of dollars under the noses of Square / Crystal to maka a game 'exclusive' to one format for Christmas 2015.

Of course after that outlay of dollars, the man employed by Microsoft isn't going to turn round and say 'yeah, exclusive to Xbox winter 2015 - but if you wait until 2016, you can buy it for our rival machines'

I'm not miffed either. I'll play Uncharted 4!!
  • I guess Lara Croft won't be giving people an Xbone after all.
I'm pretty sure Sony had exclusive rights on the original Tomb Raider game, but (while it's still a big franchise) the series is hardly as important to the success or failure of a console as it was back then.
No, it was a PC/Saturn/PSX game.

Unless you mean it didn't come out on Microsoft consoles? In which case, that's true - it pre-dated them by half a decade! :D
Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?
A: It goes without saying that this site's about MoneySaving.

Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.
  • I big fan of the tomb raiders but im not going to buy xbox for that. I dont understand why they do exclusive as i can't see a lot of people selling PS4 to get XBONE1 or buy the console as well as own PS4. How do MS make money on exclisive what i dont understand?? shouldnt be done like this, should be done like fronza motorspot and GT. They both made for 1 console and i prefer fronza. Devilmaycry was PS only same as Metal gear ( I think) but now they gone on all platform. it those 2 games in which i always stuck with PS4!! But still wont buy XBONE1 as i dont want half the rubbish that comes with it, just want to play games..

Someone said the MS gona make their console play MKV etc well sony will soon have it as they said the will but i dont used it as my TV plays all format (SAMSUNG LED) it read off my NAS drive. Got 4 TB filled with blurays it cant get any easier..

They're not really trying to convince people to replace their PS4's with Xbox's although that would be a bonus to them. Microsoft are trying to lure in the large section of the market that haven't bought a console yet but will be buying one in the future and are perhaps undecided which one. They know that if those people look at technical specs only then PS will win out, so they need some solid titles behind them hence an exclusivity deal (timed or not) on one of gaming's major titles.

Cool thanks for explaining that didnt think it like that.. but would you think that one exclsive will do the job

I play battlefield 4 on PC and pay the premuims to get the expansion 2 weeks early.. i reckon game makers will make 10x more doing that than taking money to make it exclsive

One exclusive alone wouldn't do the job, no, but Microsoft does have others including Halo up their sleeve. It'll be part of a coordinated strategy whereby they will try and lure in major franchises to sign either exclusivity deals or to provide exclusive content for games on their platform - nothing that both they and Sony haven't been doing for a while.

It's all about Microsoft saying to the undecided future console buyers look what we've got that you'll be able to do with our console now/sooner than the opposition. It's exactly what Sky do with Sky Movies and Now TV - "We have more latest releases than Netflix and Amazon combined!"

If I were to buy a console tomorrow, right now, it'd be the Xbox One. I know that gaming wise it is inferior (but that's why I have a gaming PC) but the exclusives on Sony's platform, with the exception of The Last of Us, don't appeal to me too much and the media features of the Xbox One appeal to me more than Sony's offering. Heck, my Xbox 360 is used more as a media box than a gaming device.
  • Last tomb raider was pretty decent. Very strange for an exclusive, especially as Ubisoft were dissapointed in the sales of the last game. Now they are narrowing their audience.

It is quote baffling, nowhere near enough to compete with Sonys exclusives.

It was the first Tomb Raider sequel which was a Sony exclusive. As you say, the first game certainly didn't appear on Microsoft Consoles years before they were launched!:p

It did eventually find it's way onto other formats. I should really Google all the details before posting, but I'm a bit pushed for time right now..

    I'm sure others will know..
