Lip on my part worn tyre

Yesterday I took my car in to have a new front tyre put on. I went for a part worn. Came back to collect the car, and they had fitted the new tyre. However it looked like the actual tyre was too big for the wheel, it had like a massive lip on it, unlike the other four tyres. It looked terrible, really stuck out! I asked them why and they tried fobbing me off saying it was a lip to prevent curbing the alloys.
I pointed out a few other cars nearby that also had low profiles, and none of these had this 'lip'
I asked them to change it for a matching tyre and after much huffing and puffing, they eventually did change it.
Has anyone else seen these tyres?

Without knowing what kind of tyre it is, hard to say, but it doesn't sound like a fob-off to me. There are plenty of tyres with rim-protector mouldings on, they're actually a sensible plan.
If you don't like the look of your new part-worn, maybe next time choose to buy a new tyre, then you can choose one you like the look of.0 -
It sounds normal, you went and bought a 2nd hand tyre, you should surely know it wasnt going to be same as the other tyres?
The tyres are what keeps the car on the road and help the car stop, buy them new!0 -

Well they would 'huff and puff' as you were likely rejecting something better / more expensive than what you eventually landed up with.
They are referred to a FR tyres (Flange Rim)
The point is they protect the sidewalls of the tyre (and the alloy wheel) from kerb damage.
All my tyres have that and I wouldn't even consider buying tyres without the FR as my wheels cost an arm and a leg to repair / refurb.
Some brands have bigger flanges than others - so perhaps you were offered a particularly large example, but these type of tyres are pretty commonplace - especially on more 'upmarket' expensive vehicles.0 -
Compare the tyre size to the others. Does it match?
Lots of tyres have the rim protectors on them. If you ave steel wheels then yes they can look silly.
That would be the least of my worries though. Where did they tyre come from would be my main concern.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Maybe they thought you needed the protection? Are your wheels kerbed?0

Ice is spot on
Flange rims are there to protect your alloy from kerb damage, they do look a little different to a normal tyre but they are great for protecting expensive alloys
Just google flange rim or maximum flange shield for further info0
