Why can I connect to TalkTalk via USB, but not ethernet?

I'm trying to install the software for my SmartAX MT882 modem which was supplied by TalkTalk.
If I have the modem connected using the USB cable then it connects to the net and installs the software no problem. I can then use the net after installation without problem.
However, if I try to install the software but instead I'm using the ethernet cable then it can't connect to the net at all, and so I can't complete installing the software.
I've tried turning off the firewall, but it didn't make any difference.
I'm doing everything exactly as stated on the installation process. Also, I completely wiped the hard drive and I done a clean install of Windows so there can't be any virus causing the problem.
Any ideas why this might be? Thanks

Just a thought, have you activated your LAN connection? you should see the double monitor symbol on your task bar. float your mouse over it and you should see Local Area Connection, Speed:100mbps Status: Connected.
If not go to Start, Connect to, Show all connections, and have a look at the Local Area connection if its disabled, right click and enable it.
Hope this helps. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

There is no double monitor symbol in the task bar. I know the symbol you mean as I've seen it before when I've used a dial-up connection.
So I went to Control Panel, then Internet Options, then I clicked on the Connections tab, and clicked on the 'Lan Settings' button.
In 'Automatic Configuration' both the following two boxes were unticked, so I ticked them...
[] Automatically detect settings
[] Use automatic configuration script
I then tried connecting again using ethernet, but no luck.something missing0 -
There is a post by cathyj in that thread posted on 11th October 2006 at 2:45pm which states...Make sure that in Windows, that in the Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections options you select "Never Dial a Connection", otherwise the computer will always attempt to use your dial-up modem to get on the Internet instead of looking for your ADSL modem on the local network.
I went to this and the "Never Dial a Connection" section is not active so it can neither be ticked or unticked.something missing0 -
You need to make sure that your LAN connection is enabled:
Go to Start, Connect to, Show all connections, and have a look at the Local Area connection if its disabled, right click and enable it.That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

Is there any other way to discover this information, or would "connect to" be located somewhere else?something missing0 -
Start --- control panel
network connections ---- LAN or high speed internet. Look to see what's there and what is connected or otherwise. You can right click as previously mentioned to enable or disable as required.0 -
Hi Zero, me again. You have not said what windows you are using, as you cannot see "connect to" when clicking on "start" I assume it is not XP. I successfully connected the smartax using ethernet on my spare windows 98se computer using the following procedure.
1 Make sure your ethernet card software is loaded on your computer (check in device mamager)
2 Put your talktalk cd in and run it to connect via the ethernet, this should enable the modem.Connect the smartax.
3 Go to "internet options" ,click on "connections" then click on "setup".This brings up a screen giving option to setup a dial up via modem or to connect via LAN, select LAN and that should enable your LAN and you should then be OK.
I presume you know that if you switch the power off to the smartax then it loses your settings unless you have gone into the routers page to save them.0 -

When I use ethernet (which doesn't work) there is nothing at all there, not even greyed out computers or anything saying disabled.something missing0 -

In Other Devices (in device manager) there is a subcategory of "Ethernet Controller". When I click on this in the General Tab it states...
"The driver for this device are not installed. (Code 28) To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver."
I clicked on Reinstall Driver, but it was not able to locate the drivers.
I wonder if this is what might be wrong?something missing0
