Npower Economy 7 times

This may sound like a silly question but please help me out......Npower say on their website that for the East Midlands, Economy 7 rate is for 7 hours between 23:00 and 07:00 hours......unless my maths is totally wrong that's 8 hours?

Unless Npower randomly choose which 7 hours between 23:00 and 07:00 they apply the cheaper tariff to, or am I getting this totally muddled? Please help :)

  • Between 23:00 and 07:00 hours you will get 7 hours of E7 priced leccy on an E7 tariff.

Thanks for the reply - but which 7 hours does the Economy 7 electricity apply to between 23:00 and 07:00? Why don't Npower say that between midnight and 07:00 (7 hours) you get Economy 7 priced electricity, am confused :(

I definitely get 8 hours of night rate, I can hear the immersion heater switch on at 01.00 and off at 09.00.

And you listen all night between those hours?

You are probably right about the 8 hours (some do seem to have more than 7), but there are also some places where it switches to peak for an hour somewhere in the middle.

Always best to check if you are setting manual timers!

Utilities say they will only guarantee 7 hours, the wording is specific so they don't run into trouble over timings and hours.

It wakes me up when it switches, but I also work nights so yes, I'm awake all that time on my days off.

It depends on the SSC of your meter, There are around 40 different E7 SSCs.

As far as I'm aware there isn't a single region that only has a single specific E7 SSC, so within each region there will be variations. This is why suppliers tend to use a blanket term that states 7 hours between x&y and not a customer specific time.

It is possible for your supplier to look up your exact time zones, but you'll need to ring them first. It may take a few calls as I doubt every agent will know how to do this.

The time time zones are set by your local MOP not by your supplier. When SMART meter come in your supplier can change the time zones, so the time zones will become more centralised and you may be able to shop around not only for price but for a time pattern that suits you.

It will depend on your switching system. Teleswitching will allow for BST/GMT changes: an older electro-mechanical type meter will not. And electro-mechanical meters usually don't keep accurate time anyway.

  • The older analogue 24 hour timer switches the cheap 7 hours could actually be anywhere in the 24 hour period, including the middle of the afternoon. Its to your benefit only if you have spotted it. Scottish Power are the only supplier to have woken up to this and are asking the meter readers to check these now. The other suppliers I read for ,BG, EDF , can`t be bothered and are not interested in finding out this important bit of info. "Which " magazine alerted the public to this last year with a story which ran something like "millions are losing money with messed up eco 7 timers "

Typical Which?, what about the millions saving money?

I know that at work we do very well out of our E7 clock. It is virtually cheap rate for the entire working hours of the company.

We have informed EDF and the DNO and neither care. EDF say the tariff is for 7 hours of cheap rate, when we get it is of no concern for them. :D
