swimming in the sea question

Yesterday me and DS went to the beach.
There were loads of people swimming in the sea. DS has never experienced this only paddled. It got me thinking that I would like him to (I loved swimming in the sea as a kid).
The issue I have is what do people do with their stuff whilst they are in there? I can lock money and house key etc in the car, my main concern is what do I do with the car key? I am happy to leave towels and clothes on the beach as if anything happened to them it would be extremely inconvenient but nothing of value would be lost. I would not be happy just leaving my car key lying around with no one looking after it.
He is too young to go in on his own and even with an older child I don't like to see them in the sea on their own, they need an adult with them at all times if they are going further than paddling.
Any suggestions?

You can buy little plastic pouches for things like this that hang round your neck. Or you could use a safety pin to attach it to your cossie strap?
e.g.http://www.amazon.co.uk/BeachPlay-Waterproof-KeySafe-Armband-Watersport/dp/B002EOZ33O/ref=pd_sim_sg_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=11PMPV0WC6K68P657DM3
or

We always just used to find a bit of the beach and leave our stuff there. It was always near a rock that we could recognise, so we didn't lose it, and far enough away from the sea so that the tide didn't wash it all away.
Luckily nothing was ever taken, and we did it a LOT!
These days though, I would perhaps leave it with the lifeguards. Often they are in their trucks on the beach at the waters edge, or sitting on their high chairs.
Just ask if you can leave stuff with them, they have always said yes to me.0 -

Are those things actually waterproof as in will survive half hour submerged under water? I though they were more for use around water where something might get splashed a lot not actually for use underwater?0 -

Thanks I might try that, I wasn't sure if they would as if everyone asked they wouldn't have the space!! hopefully they will its only the key I need looking after towels and clothes will have to take their chances.0 -

if you want something a bit more expensive then look at the aquapac range
store.aquapac.net/watersports/keymaster
they are rated IPX 8 submersible, Protected against long periods of immersion under pressure - The case is suitable for immersion for at least 30 minutes to a depth of 30ft / 10m.
if it will keep water out for 30 minutes at 10 mts down it should be more than suitable for a swim on the surface0
