@Nifty, I get the picture, I'll be more careful next time ;)

shall I just uninstall all the recent stuff I downloaded and re-install it paying attention to the installation process like you said ?

I ran Malwarebytes 3 times yesterday and all 3 times it found malware, despite me not downloading anything yesterday…

couldn't get Telstra to work last night after you “left”, the modem said connected but I got the “Unable to connect to the Internet” message

Reset all of your Browsers. As I suggested before...you should really copy off your important data to an external source and the run a full destructive restore...and then stop installing junk programs to your laptop.

At that you point you should think about updating your OS to Windows 8.1 Update 1.

thanks but won't that uninstall all the programs I added, including the good ones (Telstra, Avast etc) ?

Also, would a simple "Refresh" be ok too ?

Yes, it will. But you appear to be having one problem after another. So a clean slate is probably not the worst idea.

You told me that you already did that, but somehow you are still running Malwarebytes many times daily.

I can clean up a bit when I have time. Long day today.
