At what age did you stop getting asked for ID?

Went to the local shop tonight to buy some cigarettes and got asked for ID, its only a local shop so they have no policy like Sainsbury's "over 25" etc. I said really?? luckily I did have ID in my bag, then she proceeded to try and calculate my age from my DOB. I'm 26 and I definitely think I look it. The lady said oh right I thought you were 16?? I said thanks for the compliment but 16 really?? Think she forgot her glasses!!

I'm 34 and I still get asked! Only in the major supermarkets though! I do look younger than I am, but not under 25 I don't think!0

My OH and I are both early 20s and may or may not get IDd depending on who serves us. Generally, younger cashiers (around our age) wont ID us as, but older cashiers generally do. Maybe older people just see us as 'young people' who need IDing, whereas younger cashiers will realise that we are over 18.0

That's a weird one. Because anyone past their mid 40s, will have been late teens in a time when not many people asked for I.D. I was born in the very late 1960s, and in the late 1980s (when I was in my late teens,) I could buy booze at 16, without being asked for I.D.
The law is way way way more strict now, and stores won't take any chances. You only have to be 18 to drink, and yet many stores insist they won't serve you unless you look over 25!
My girls are 19 and 20 and as long as they have their I.D. with them; they have no trouble. But without it, they can't get served, as they look like they could be anything between 16 and 21. So the cashiers won't take the chance that they may be underage.
But I genuinely don't think I have EVER been asked for I.D.
Probably different for people born in the early 1980s and onwards...0 -
The last time I was trying to buy a meal for £10 in a well-known store. I had no ID on me, except for my bankcard. My mother was just behind me in the queue and kept assuring the poor employee she remembered giving birth to me 36 years before! :rotfl:
In fairness, the strong light in the store must have played a factor because I definitely now couldn't pass for 25 or under in a normal light. I have only recently started to look my age and would get asked for ID any time I tried to buy booze up to when I was 32 or 33. It was really, really annoying and a bit embarassing when I was 18-20 and trying to blend in with my slightly older friends.0 -
I didn't have any makeup on which may have made a difference - but to me I look worse without it fine lines and funny colouring etc. The same lady has served me before without asking for it, so now starting to wonder if it is the make up. The reason I keep ID with me most of the time is because I usually buy my cigarettes in the Sainsburys or Asda beside my work and they are super strict about looking over 25 for their policy.
although I did think at my age I wouldn't have to worry about looking over 18. Taking it as a compliment anyways.0 -
I'm 36 and still get asked for ID on occasion!0

Supermarkets are certainly more strict than anywhere else.
Saying that the last time I was asked for ID anywhere I was about 26. My girlfriend was asked the other week and she's 28. She clearly looks younger than me!0 -
In my late twenties and still get asked for ID pretty regularly. Usually a moment of awkward surprise when they finally figure out my age. A few weeks ago, I was ID'd for a Euromillions ticket. My partner was ID'd for a Playstation magazine once.0

I never know what age I really look like, just turned 32 a few days ago yet when I speak to people they often assume I am around 25 on average yet at same time when I go to places aimed at students i.e they are handing out leaflets for entry to clubs or freebies for young people they walk right past me and if I ask them why they say I look too old to be a student.
Some days I can look in the mirror and look my age other times I think I look really young I think its a combination of sleep and stress
5 years ago at uni I would go out with flatmates or people on course and they would id the entire group apart from me and I was 27 then so barely over the 25 check, but at same time I got id'd by a shop assistant for scissors and the assistant themselves looked no older than 16 and was id'd for buying a knife from poundland and was id'd
I can never tell if people are being polite or really think I look my age, I have no wrinkles at all and do not drink alcohol nor smoke cigarettes and have good physical health apart from weight i.e normal blood pressure, good cholesterol good blood sugar etc.
I reckon if I lost weight and dressed better(since I wear a baggy t shirt and jeans all the time) I would be id'd more.0 -
With or without makeup, you can tell who's underage for alcohol purchases for the most part. Some people look younger than they are, but that's a very tiny minority, and it happens in late twenties - not forties. If anyone in their forties claim they got ID'd, they're either lying, or got asked for ID because the shop person was being nice (or stupid). Very, very, very few people look like 20 year olds when they're in their 40's. It's just another feelgood thing. "Oh, I got ID'd in Tesco today!" "Hahaha! No wonder, you look so good!". Hahaha...
Nope. You can tell. Don't fool yourselves people! lol0
