I had a nose around HPC today and it's dawned on me that nearly all of them seem to want to buy in London.

Why don't you all move somewhere cheaper?

So just a bit of sport with EA's.

Why do you want people who outbid you to suffer?

Absolute envy.... Such a shame that he is affected so negatively. But it's not our fault for positioning ourselves in the best financial position available to us.

I think it makes him look pretty bad after all the people who bought were most likely just buying a home.

this one puts the AWE back in STOW!

Genuine question - I'm trying to make sense of this thread but I'm confused - how does this property prove anything? Looks massively overpriced to me but I can't see anywhere where there has been a reduction in asking price.

Says on right move that it is on the market for a lot more than similar properties in 2007, 2008, 2009 but then we knew that already.

    Hi Joeskeppi,

My DH was made redundant in early 2013. He's 48 and fairly high up in management, succeesful and highly paid. Anecdotally back in 2013 I saw a lot of companies getting rid of layers of mangement.
Anyway DH was unemployed for a year (during that time he was getting depressed) and then found a job in London. (emotionally he was delighted as his self-esteem returned - I cannot over-emphasize that aspect especially for a man - in some cases it can lead to suicide).

It's only one anecdote but I reckon good jobs are becoming rarer and more London centric.

We now live in London during the week and will (in future) be looking for somewhere to buy (when we have enough books to get a mortgage).
Ideally we'd rather live locally (to where we have a house and family) but as I said he didn't find any suitable jobs locally on his chosen career path - and that's someone who's quite successful.

At the end of the day I guess it is a choice.
He could go work on a supermarket checkout and give up his career, but we see the best choice we have as living in London.

So in short - the answer from me is good jobs/career.

There are also many good aspects of being in London that we enjoy. It's a fabulous place with plenty to enjoy. The transport is fantastic.
So if you think we're all having a rotten time because we're cramed on a tube for a few mins a day or because we don't have spacious accomodation, then I'd say that's a complete fallacy.

I have a lovely 5-bed house in Wiltshire with all mod cons.
I also live in small studios in Zone 1 the week with DH.
It's lovely to have a nice house and nice garden etc. but I can honestly say that like money, it doesn't actually contribute directly to our level of happinesss.

I am far happier if I have a great week socially with friends/DH in London than I am if I don't see anybody in Wiltshire because there isn't any public transport, the last train is too early, we can't drink because we have to drive.
Everyone has this idea that the countryside is idyllic but having a foot in both camps I can see how it's easy to be isolated and lonely.

My colleagues socialise in London, but we don't in Bath because we all can't drink/train leaves too early/ have to park the car/drive home etc. Consequently the atmosphere in the London office is WAY better because people socialise.

So in short - there are good jobs in London and it's a real groovy place to live as well.
We might even move their fully one day.

Does that help answer your question?
  • here is a lovely price drop
looks like they tried to cash in at the height of the BUBBLE bit missed the peak by a month
starts life as £385k in May gradually reducing to £315k today
even if it does sell for that much (which i seriously doubt) there is now a nice downward spiral of sold prices emerging on that street
personally, i wouldn't go anywhere near it

Because they "bid" with bankers tokens that were designed to benefit top bankers in the biggest Ponzi scam in history, is anyone seriously going to deny this? (cue supply and demand, not enough bricks, to many people moving down from Mars....YAWN) For this reason they are not deserving of sympathy when it goes wrong. If they can`t intellectually understand it, they will understand it financially. They were the sheep, the bankers (and politicians) were the wolves.

i have to admit i was caught up in this nonsense earlier this year.
it got to the point where i was putting offers above the asking price on houses i didn't want in areas i didn't want to live in.
looking back i'm very grateful that these people outbid me and saved me from my own stupidity but at the same time i have sympathy for them.
