Definitely try warm water with the dry food - it will help release the smell of the food which will probably make her more interested :) Or as you say - home made stock is great - I always have some in the freezer (condenced down a lot then frozen as ice cubes - one would easily make enough for a large bowl of doggy food or split in two when added to water and split in two portions so one cube per day :)

  • Waterfalls Thanks for they have mentioned me testing her blood sugar at home to try and keep track as her levels seem to be doing the opposite of hwat they are meant to. For example in her last curve on Thursday she had her brekkie and insulin at 8.30am and when they started yesting her levels went up all day hitting a peak at 4pm (thought that should be when the insulin is at its most effective) and then dropped off, she had her tea at 8.30 pm and then her levels dropped and ended up boarderline too low by 10pm when they then started climbing again. All a bit odd the vet thinks but hopefully this new diet will help.
How easy it to test levels at home, the vets put a catheter in and take samples from that but I have read somewhere you can do it with a pin !!!!! in her ear and test from there is that correct do you know?
I'm going to buy a small bag of dry complete and try her with that mixed with meat and if that doesn't work go for adding a bit of home made stock.
Thanks MrsTyne for the frozen concentrated cube suggestion will def be trying that!

  • its fairly easy. you use the inside part of the ear. towards the edge as its more vascular, your dog may need some of the ear clipped if rather hairy.
warm the ear up in your hands and pricik with a sterile needle, place the blood on a glucose strip and record the reading.
can use hand held machine from the chemist, but maybe cheaper to use a loaner one from ur vet if they have one.
    record results on a graph
some pets gets rather stressed in the vets also, therefore increasing the glucose levels so may help the results at home
this may need to be carried out every 2 hours for 12-24 hours. but could def save money when trying to stabilse them intially
  • Waterfalls that sounds easy thanks I will def have a chat with the vet when we are there next week. She doesn't seem to get stressed when she goes to the vets if you mention the vet word she runs to the door and gets straight in the car quite happily but it would be good to do a curve at home and see how it compares.
Also may stop me being paranoid and worrying the her levels are too low/high etc if I do a check a day at home or something.
She has git huge (and I do mean huge) ears and they are not too hairy so that shouldn't be an issue either.
    :D:rolleyes:;):cool::o:rolleyes:;):o:o:cool:
  • def worth a go i think, best of luck, hope she stabilises soon, let us know how u get on
  • Hi

We need to give our dog Hills Prescription Dog Food, does anyone know the cheapest place to buy this, and can we go through a cashback site.

    Thanks
    Jackie
very expensive horrible food. google lots and lots of very bad things said of this food. it is good for vets business to recommend this food as you will see. no benefit to the animal as it says though so not good.

Royal Canine are doing tins of wet food now by the way.

You also mentioned about swopping insurers - DONT - a new insurer wont cover her condition at all.

I have to feed one of my dogs a prescription dog food (eukanuba dermatosis) I get it from Nutrecare.com. They have 12 packs of Hills for £14.25- about £1.18 a tin, often have special offers on too. Good service usually comes next day.
