Hi
We need to give our dog Hills Prescription Dog Food, does anyone know the cheapest place to buy this, and can we go through a cashback site.
Thanks
Jackie

Hello imported_jac
As we have a 'Pets & Pet Care' board, I'll move your thread across.
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. The vets have today decided that as well as insulin my dog also needs to go onto a special diet food to try and control her blood sugar levels.
After having to pay the exorbitant cost of £1,76 for a 370g tin (for her size she will need 4 tins a day!! ARGHHH) from the vets so she had enough to keep going while I shop around I thought I would have a look online.
The cheapest I have found so far is £1.23 per tin but wondered if anyone has found it any cheaper?
Or of course if anyone else has had a diabetic dog that needs prescription food and has found other brands cheaper than the hills stuff that do the same job or has any recipes to make my own diabetic dog food I would really appreciate it
She can't have the biscuits as her teeth are fairly worn out and eating too many biccies hurts so she would usually rather not eat so whatever she has it needs to be easily chewed.
She is insured (thanks god I kept it) and the insurance documents say they will contribute towards the cost of prescription food but only 50% however I also have to pay 30% of the vet bill (old dog so %age increasing each year) does anyone know if the insurers will contribute the full 50% or will they then also apply my percentage contribution?
I have tried asking the insurers but couldn't get a clear answer they just said to make sure its on the claim form its for diabetes and not her weight and that it would be assessed when they recieve the bill and they would let me know if they will contribute towards the food cost. I am hoping they will or food alone will cost me £150 per month plus her insurance plus my contribution towards her insulin needles etc.;):o:rolleyes:;):o:o:cool:

have u thought about soaking the biscuits in water first to try and soften them up first?
what brand have the recommeded, because there is usually hills, royal canin and purina. one of them maybe cheaper for you0 -
I would recommend at least thinking about the dry diet
It is a lot cheaper, and as another poster has said, you can soak it in warm water to make it palatable for her.
There is a very good reason for the vet recommending that diet, and if you go back to him/her most good vets will explain their reasons (ie diabetics need high fibre etc - eta - not that simple) and will be happy to help you find a cheaper alternativeI can't think of anything interesting to write here.........0 -
Thanks think I will buy a very small bag of the dry and try it with water, in fact may add a stock cube to the water and see if that helps (plain water didn't last time I tried)
I think they just said the hill's precription diet as that is the one the onsite shop stocks, We are back again next week for yet another glucose curve so will ask about other brands then.;):o:rolleyes:;):o:o:cool:

watch out with stock cubes for dogs - they are very high in salt, which is not good for dogs!!
You can buy a special 'dog gravy' (for dogs, not made from them presumably!) from pet food shops which is low in salt, and I recently spotted some sachets of gravy for babies which I would assume would be low in salt too!
Add hot/boiling water, and let it soak till its cool enough to eat, should soften it quite a lot.0 -
Thanks for that I didn't realise so much salt in stck cubes, will have a look at the baby gravy or make my own stock so I know exactly whats in it.

if you vet allow u, wod bu be able to do the glucose curve at home? this may help save costs. thy may not allow u to start with, but for monitoring it maybe ok, i know some of our clients are happy to do this.
also maybe u could mix the wet and dry together to make it more interesting for ur pet?0 -
