Maclaren major special needs buggy

Does anybody know wher I could hire one of these buggies or wher I could buy one for less than 199.00. My little girl (8) has special needs and can't walk for long periods. I can't bear another summer of staying at home with her while my husband and son go off and do stuff. At least we if we have a buggy when she gets tired we can put her in it and carry on at present one of us ends up either staying at home or sitting in the car. I have tried freecycle but no luck and ebay but they are popular and have numerous bids. Our local social services are getting back to me sometime in the near future! And the wheelchair services don't provide them anymore! Any help gratefully received.

I got one from ebay some years ago, now but they come up all the time.
If she has special needs, wheelchair services could be fobbing you off as I believe they have a statutory obligation to provide them if they are needed.
I am no expert though, but if you ask on www.specialkidsintheuk.co.uk (you will need to register and go to the forum) you will find that someone will know and be able to advise you.
    Hope that helps.

I know a number of people who have been given funding to buy one from the Family Fund. May be worth googling to see whether you would qualify for a grant to help with the costs

We used to use one of these. We are in Hampshire - whereabouts in the country are you? My son now has a new wheelchair and his old Mcclaren is sitting up in our loft unused. PM me if you don't want to say on the board.

If your daughter needs one then you should get one from your wheelchair services, you shouldn't have to pay out for one yourself. At 8 too she is really at the very top size for a Major, again wheelchair services should be able to sort out something suitable.

I do agree with previous posters, I think you've been fobbed off by your local services, do try to get to www.specialkidsintheuk.org great place for advice. (previous poster gave slightly wrong address)

I've got one sitting in the shed collecting dust in Merseyside if thats any use to you!!

We got it a few years ago via social services for my disabled son - but we found that he was using it out of lazyness and not because he needed to!!

Theres a few on ebay at the minute, from £50 to £150, but all with a couple of days to go.

Speak to your GP. In Leicestershire they are provided through the GPs budget. They just need to complete the form with some measurements. However they are only for use of children who don't need any further seating support.

  • My local lions group bought my daughter a maclaren major about 6 years ago - that time my social worker asked them and last year I wrote to them myself and they kindly bought my daughter a big 3 wheel buggy suitable for up to age 16 - it is big but really easy and light to push even on the beach! I had a wheel chair from the wheelchair service and it was awful and they were very relunant to give it to us as my daughter has autism and can walk but just won't walk outside!!
