Unless the tyres are out-of-round, so wearing unevenly around the circumference, then you don't need to. And you'd feel that, especially at m'way speeds.
All you need to do is just look across the width of the tread. If you can periodically check the inside sidewall for damage, too, great. But every week - when you check lights, fluids and pressures - just glance across the tread.
Thanks for a non-attacking answer! I do glance across the treads and now wish I had done that just before taking the car in for a light bulb change!
Of course I have no wish to drive an unsafe vehicle, am not lazy and hadn't felt any change in the handling of the car. I was therefore astounded that the tryres were 'bald' - never had bald tyres before in my umpteen years of happy motoring.
I'm still not convinced that they actually were in that state but that'll teach me not to assume that all is as told.0 -

But, again, if you've been checking them regularly, you'd surely KNOW whether they were getting low or not...? It might be that the garage is telling you a porkie. It might be that they're talking about tread above the 1.6mm minimum. But... you'd KNOW, right?0 -
Would be handy to know what the car is and how it is used, but if it is an Exec class or above car you will find Pirellis are great in most respects, apart from durability. I believe 6000 miles is a record for my Wife to burn out a pair of PZeros on the rear of a 5 series.0

Not enough info provided to give any specific opinions.
I've had cars that wore out a set of front tyres every 6k, even driven as sensibly as it's possible to drive an Alfa.
On the other hand, I've got a set of tyres on my Land Rover with more than 6mm of tread left at well over 100k.0 -
Modern tyres have more grip, but wear out in no time.
I used to get 30,000 miles from Mitchelin ZXs (they were like pen erasers, hard as iron, and no wet grip at all) now 10-12000 miles is good going for the £100 each silly low profile efforts on my car (next time my criteria are: aircon, heated mirrors, automatic and very common (cheap) tyre size)
It hardly seems worth doing the wheel nuts up with the rate that the tyres and brake discs wear out nowadays :rotfl:On the other hand, I've got a set of tyres on my Land Rover with more than 6mm of tread left at well over 100k.
Always worries me that the old fashioned solid axles on a Landrover wear the tyres out completely flat & even, yet the "modern" independent suspension setups knock the edges off and scrap the tyre with plenty of tread left in the middle. Progress eh?I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Quick question OP. They say your tyres are "bald" and have given them a score of 0/1/0 etc. However, what was the actual depth of the tread? - legal minimum is 1.6mm, so these tyres from what you are saying could be at 1.5mm. Yes, still illegal, but have gone from 6mm to 1.5 mm.
Wearing that amount down is doable, I dont think you have been "done"
Another question, are these summer tyres, not winter / all seasons? - all seasons & winters wear out a lot faster in warmer weather.0 -
0/1/0 is normally short hand for tread depth measured at inner edge, middle and outer edge.0

They don't just go bald over night.
I'm still confused how somebody can check their tyres regularly, be surprised when told they are illegal and doubt what they have been told.
I'm betting you would have got better responses if you just said outright you haven't checked them so taking this as a lesson rather than I check my tyres regularly and surprised to suddenly find out one or two is illegal all0 -
It normally depends on two things...
First your style of driving....whether you accelerate and brake too much...
Secondly on the make of tyre...The first tyres on my current car were Dunlop's and only lasted 20,000 miles, I then bought Michelins which have so far done 45000 miles and there is still 3-4 mm left on the tread.
So in answer to you original question....yes it is perfectly possible.
You really need to check your tyres regularly because if you had been stopped by the police its 3 penalty points for each illegal tyre !!0
