Tyre wear query
Morning - I would appreciate some advice about my tyre wear.
On 30 December last year my car had it's third service and the mileage was 52219. Tyre tread for the two front tyres (Pirelli) was 6mm all round. The back tyres were better at 7mm
On 27 July this year I needed some work done and took the car in - mileage now 64258. The tyre tread for the two front tyres was now recorded as 'bald' with scores of 0/1/0 and 1/2/0. Back tyres now scoring 4mm all round.
I was fairly shocked at the front tyres. Only just over 12,000 miles and the tyres go from 6mm to 0mm - can this be correct?
I know that the front tyres take more wear than back however this situation has got me really shaken up but also a bit doubting.
Was I 'done' or was I 'not done'? Just generally....

do you ever look at your tyres?
it is entirely possible that a tyre has worn down to that kind of measurement in 12 thousand miles, a lot will depend on driving how the car has been driven
if they have been changed i would have asked to see the old tyres just to see how bad they were , but the measurements you gave your tyres were illegal0 -
As it appears you never check the tyre pressures it is quite possible the fronts have been at low pressure for months. This increases tyre wear.
That said depending on the car less than 10,000 miles to go from 8mm to just legal is possible, I have experienced it.0 -

Yes, I do. I travel a load of miles each year (car is a 61) and so am very concious of the safety of myself and others on the road. I know the measurements I was given show the tyres to be illegal!
I was asking if the wear from 6mm to 0mm in 12,000 miles is feasible or not. My driving style has not changed and is not aggressive, neither is my braking.0 -
There's a bit of a logical disconnect here...Yes, I do. I travel a load of miles each year (car is a 61) and so am very concious of the safety of myself and others on the road.

If you check your tyres regularly, then you don't need to ask us if it's feasible, because you've watched them wear over the last six months, so you know exactly whether it's feasible or not.0 -
It was just a query...
When I check my tyres I don't see all round them. Now, in a perfect world you'd be saying I should do that... mea culpa!0 -
You don't need to check all round just a simple check against the tyre wear indicators would give you a rough idea of what the tread is like. How someone can say their safety conscious and not know if their tyres are completely bald is beyond me!0

Unless the tyres are out-of-round, so wearing unevenly around the circumference, then you don't need to. And you'd feel that, especially at m'way speeds. When I check my tyres I don't see all round them. Now, in a perfect world you'd be saying I should do that... mea culpa!
All you need to do is just look across the width of the tread. If you can periodically check the inside sidewall for damage, too, great. But every week - when you check lights, fluids and pressures - just glance across the tread.0 -
I wonder if tyre neglect is more of a problem now so many people don't wash their own cars.0

I suspect it's mainly because many people are bone-bloody-idle. See obesity statistics for further information.0
