To be fair we do get bored of it sometimes; we seem to have odd months where we spurge and treat ourselves a bit but I think it is probably healthy to take a bit of a break from being very strict the rest of the time.

Speaking of splurging... I *may* have accidentally put a bid on a second hand chicken coop today  It's local, and I have set myself a low max bid that I won't exceed... so we'll see what happens! Chickens in the garden are something we have all wanted for a long time so if I end up the winning bidder then we can perhaps consider it a present to ourselves to celebrate reaching 50%

The friends of ours who donate their eggs to us have spare bits and bobs like feeders they are happy to give us, and I'd really love to rehome some ex-battery hens so other than the cost of a coop it shouldn't be too expensive a venture.... :o

I baked a loaf of bread in the breadmaker today for the first time in ages- smells incredible! Two very excited children waiting for the pinger to go off! Was hoping to make some sort of curry this evening with last of the leftover roast pork from Sunday, but there isn't quite enough to stretch that far, even padded out with chick peas and so on. Making a special fried rice with the pork, prawns/peas from the freezer, egg, and a bit of Chinese seasoning instead. Determined not to venture into a supermarket for a few more days!

My DH is the least on board of the four of us, but has been swayed by just how delicious the eggs are that our friends give us ;)

If we do win the coop I'll be over the moon, as it will be a bargain, but I suspect it will go for more...

    Fingers crossed! :-D

  • I agree it's healthy to have the odd treat to keep you motivated to carry on. Sounds like you *may* have some chickens soon, lol. Fingers crossed for you, hope you win the coop. My brother in law and family keep chickens and they love them. It's a lovely idea and a great way to get some fresh produce for minimal cost.

Once we pay off our pesky debts and have bought a house I'd definitely consider it as well if we had a good size garden. My in laws are from Ireland and used to keep chickens, ducks, goats etc. Sounds like they lived in a farmyard but with those and their own allotment they were very self sufficient. I love the idea of that :)

Just catching up pink and loving your conversation re chickens. You can make feeds and water troughs from 4 pint milk cartons etc - y0utube it :) That's what we did when we first started to keep costs down. The only issue we have now is I'm getting 6 eggs a day and we have too many!!

Fingers crossed you reach those goals - looking forward to 50% x

Two bits of good news this morning! Firstly, we won the coop for a bargain price! Someone else bid higher but pulled out or didn't pay up so we were offered it as the next highest bidder! Off to collect it on Monday! Will definitely google those milk carton feeders DF, thanks for the tip! The children and I are excited!

Secondly... we are now SUB £20k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :j:j:j:j:j:j Current total is now £19,998. Over the moon!

Getting there has left us very short on cash until payday but I don't care if we have to live on pasta and beans on toast until then as it feels so good to get there! Only a few days until payday anyway, and we have plenty of food in the cupboards and freezer.

    Happy Saturday all round!

    Thank you both!

Payday has arrived a few days earlier than expected and the weather forecast is looking ok so we have decided to head off for a few days camping in our tent at a cheap but pretty campsite not too far from home. Making the most of half term!

So, I'm drawing a line under May and have updated my signature figures for the start of June a couple of days early.

Busy day washing/drying clothes and packing ahead. Picked up the coop yesterday and it needs a few repairs (well, it was very cheap after all!) so it's sat in the corner of the garden until next week when I can get it ship shape and then start thinking about finding some chickens to put in it. Exciting!
