But 11pm is the cut off time for noise I believe. I agree that if the dog is barking every single night but the OP says it isn't.

I know children and some people can be in bed long before 11pm but what about other noises? I find car doors slamming to be very annoying (it sometimes sounds like one car has about 8 doors!), loud music, people talking really loudly in the street?

When you live in a semi-rural area, as the OP does, you very rarely hear the type of sounds you describe above. In fact, you don't hear many sounds at all late in the evening so everything is amplified more and for a dog to be barking continuously for even just two minutes can become extremely irritating.

If foxes are a regular occurrence then the OP needs to teach her puppy to ignore them. It's all part of socialisation which is extremely important for puppies, especially in the first few months. Her trainer should have dealt with this in the very first training session!

All this talk of 11pm being the ''cut of point'' is complete nonsense. It is about having respect for neighbours and not thinking the world revolves around you - rather than expecting people to be fine with being repeatedly woken up by a noise pest that is the owners responsibility to deal with

Car doors slamming isn't really comparable unless someone is standing their slamming the door for several minutes and neither is people walking past talking - they are just passing issues, rather than a continuous pest of a noise

Getting enough sleep is actually a health issue. Constant lack of sleep can higher the chances of all sorts of serious health issues - as well as constantly feeling like rubbish

That's why I suggested speaking to other neighbors. It may well be that the Op's neighbor has decided to target the Op for some reason. It's not out of the realms of possibility.

My neighbor's voice gets on my nerves and disturbs me, however I would never consider complaining about that. Dogs need a method of communication. The dog probably isn't even barking of 2mins solid. Probably more like seconds.

Some people just feel the need to moan about anything.

It's OP who said that the dog barks for 2 minutes, so coming from the horse's mouth, as such.

I too have had a neighbour comment on my dog's barking. In my case, it was true - we didn't realise our move triggered a case of separation anxiety and that she was barking on and off all day. We recognised that it was an issue, and addressed it.

I certainly wish my neighbours would do something about their dogs' barking, and I say that as someone who's been there, done that. Barking is an annoying noise - so I aim to minimise mine just as must as I avoid putting the washing machine on too late or early, or using the hoover, food processor, DIY noises, etc. It may not be a legal requirement, but it's common courtesy, especially if you know the walls are thin or if it's happening outside where the sound can travel.

I agree that people should have respect for neighbours but unless the dog is barking every night I don't see that the neighbour can do much about it. I know my local council have taken no action about a dog that barks an awful lot - some days it can be hours at a time and late night and early morning and neighbours have been complaining about it for a few years.

As far as I am concerned, car doors don't have to be slammed continuously for several minutes. Just slamming a door or two if I am asleep wakes me and it then often takes hours before I can get back to sleep. The same is true of people walking past talking loudly. Both these noises seem to happen quite regularly where I live and I don't live on a main road and rarely go to bed before midnight.

I'm the same, a pretty light sleeper. Being kept awake at night really makes me mad - same for my husband. He is up at 3am most mornings and if our neighbours dog is barking until 11am, on and off, that leaves him with four hours sleep. I myself am up at 5am each day so we are both early starters each day

Unfortunately our neighbours dog is far worse than OP, well not the dog, the owner - shutting the dog out for several hours sometimes int he early morning can mean most people around our street must be wide awake

  • Although my dog goes to bed fairly early, if he needs to go out for a wee, then I let him. It doesn't matter what time of night it is.

A while ago now, my dog had eaten something he found on the street. It give a bad tummy and I could hear him pacing about at 3 am. He was really desperate to go out to do his business. However, I did stand out with him.

I've heard people moaning about birds tweeting saying it's keeping them awake. Someone is always going to moan about something.

Unless your dog has the bowl movements of a blue whale.
I dont see it being an issue for your neighbours
  • I don't allow him to bark if he needs to go out on a night. I stand out with him regardless of what the weather is like.

I hope not as people want to enjoy their homes at any time of day or night - what if someone decides they want t have a nap at 5pm? Or works nights and sleeps days?

Personally I hate any kind of noise and when I was having problems with my dog barking and causing nuisance to neighbours (day time, she never barks at night) frankly I was mortified as I did not want to be upsetting anyone.

I hate people on the tube on my way to work listening to music so loud that I can hear it from far away - and I am awake when on the tube. Or cars driving by playing loud music at night. Doors slamming. Washing machine at insane o'clock (I live n a flat)

I have very low tolerance for noise, any noise - and find it very annoying/disturbing. So do a lot of other people.

Honestly - in the evenings all of my 4 cats and a dog are quiet and sleeping. My downstairs neighbour always asks me "do you still have the dog and cats" as he says he can NEVER hear them - and I have laminate flooring so eve if they were running around he would hear them.

Yes dogs bark as people talk BUT we all have to be considerate to others and limit the dog talk to secluded places when it is unlikely to annoy anyone.

I too have a low tolerance for noise and could scream when some of my neighbours keep slamming their car doors. Also my elderly neighbour is a bit deaf and has her radio so loud I can hear it almost all the time, even sometimes over my radio or tv.

I do know though that a few years ago when I had neighbours that would play loud music late at night my local council told me that although if a noise something like a party then 11pm is the time it should quieten down.

I too try to be quiet and considerate. If my dogs bark during the day they usually stop very quickly. If they don't I tell them to be quiet. If they are outside I make them come in. They rarely bark at night and if they do it usually means something is going on (one time a neighbour was being burgled). I get up early and would love to hoover then (especially in the hot weather so I don't get all hot and bothered) or put my washing machine on but I don't even though, as I say my neighbour is rather deaf.

I also suffer badly from migraines and have to spend days in bed sometimes when the slightest noise drives me insane. Unfortunately there is no law that says people cannot make a noise during the day and it seems most people are not very considerate.

When my OH worked shifts and sometimes slept during the day he wore earplugs and he is actually a deep sleeper. You can't really expect people to not make any noise or stop their children making a noise playing in the garden or whatever just because someone may be trying to sleep during the day
