I don't think it's fair to have a dog (or any animal) barking at any time of the day or night, it doesn't matter if your relaxing in your garden in the afternoon drinking Lemonade, watching a weepy film in the early evening or trying to sleep at 03:00 in the morning a neighbours noisy animal is an intrusion so if your dog is a known barker you need to take responsibility for it and do something not just because it barks at night -on this occasion your neighbour is right I'm afraid.

If you read the thread properly, which seems to be something most posters are incapable of, you will see the OP says the dog only barks at a noise/fox not that it barks constantly. Also although I originally thought that the dog had free access via the dog flap throughout the night the OP posted again to say it does not so the dog is not barking through the night.

Dogs bark that is a fact of life BUT it is up to the owner to make sure they do not bark too much. My dog barks if there is a loud noise or someone around and I want him to do that. I did not get him as a guard dog but to me, there is little point in having a dog that would let someone break in and not make any noise at all.

If the dog is barking occasionally and only for a brief time then the neighbour certainly is not right.

2 minutes of dog barking is a nuisance. a single or 2-3 barks is normal but a dog barking for 2 minutes straight? That isn't normal & usually means the dog is stressed or has gone in to defense mode. If there are foxes then you need to keep the dog inside until it is old enough & trained enough to not react to every one it sees.
I don't respond to stupid so that's why I am ignoring you.

OP why do you think it's ok to disrupt other people's lives with your actions?

You need to train your dog not to bark. Every time he barks then bring him back into the house. Keep doing this every time until he learns that being outside is a reward for being quiet.

I also agree with the others that you should still be using a crate at night. Puppies need the security and a safe place to sleep as well as helping with toileting habits. I would never use a dog flap. How can you supervise your dog outdoors if it can just let itself out whenever it likes?

And again, I agree with others about changing your trainer. I have a GSD puppy and we're just a few weeks into puppy training classes but have already covered basic commands, recall, lead walking and excessive barking etc.

My puppy now stops barking as soon as I say 'quiet'. She will also stop whatever she is doing when I say 'stop' (useful for when she flies off down the garden with my socks or slippers :rotfl: ) and comes running straight back to me when I say 'come'. She also knows sit, stand, down and wait and is only just 4 months old :D
  • I can totally emphasize with the OP. I moved into a property last august. Six months after I had moved in my neighbor decided that my dog was constantly barking at 9am and 9pm. My dog isn't even at home at 9am as he is either out with me or getting baby sat. Same at 9pm, he's in his bed asleep. He complained to the landlord and tried to get a petition up to get me evicted. He also told me my dog was getting taken off me and put to sleep.

I asked other neighbors if my dog was bothering them and was told they never hear him. When my neighbor decided he was getting anywhere, he told a few neighbors that he was going to kill my dog with a hammer. From then on my dog is never left alone.

He's a complete liar and a bully. Unfortunatly there are some nasty people who get a kick out of harrassing and upsetting others. I would take no notice and maybe do what I did and ask other neighbors whether your dog bothers them.

I'd also just keep bringing your dog up in a way you see fit.

That's not the same at all TDMMDI - in your case you have a neighbour complaining about something that isn't happening. In the OP's case the neighbour has a legitimate complaint about the noise her dog is making.

OP 11pm is too late. After 9pm when many children are in bed is the very latest I'd be allowing the dog to bark outside.

  • That's why I suggested speaking to other neighbors. It may well be that the Op's neighbor has decided to target the Op for some reason. It's not out of the realms of possibility.

My neighbor's voice gets on my nerves and disturbs me, however I would never consider complaining about that. Dogs need a method of communication. The dog probably isn't even barking of 2mins solid. Probably more like seconds.

Some people just feel the need to moan about anything.

But 11pm is the cut off time for noise I believe. I agree that if the dog is barking every single night but the OP says it isn't.

I know children and some people can be in bed long before 11pm but what about other noises? I find car doors slamming to be very annoying (it sometimes sounds like one car has about 8 doors!), loud music, people talking really loudly in the street?
