Neighbour Complaining about Puppy Barking

I was worried about the amount of night time barking my last dog did when he was a puppy. Nobody actually complained to my knowledge but it seemed to me to be pretty anti-social not to deal with it. I used a citronella collar which let out a little squirt if he barked and this seemed to so the trick quite quickly."'Cause it's a bittersweet symphony, this life

Dogs shouldn't be allowed to bark during the late evening as you know it is going to keep people/children awake, if he is barking when their are foxes/people walking by then don't let him out on his own. Our dog is one to bark at people going by, so we simply don't let him out on his own, why should we allow him to disturb others, we chose to have a dog, part if that responsibility means we don't make others suffer for our choice.0

He's not left to wander, supervised at ALL times. He goes back in the house at 11pm but the neighbour is complaining about barking before that time. I re-iterate he is always supervised and is exercised 4-5 times a day.
Perhaps I shouldn't have asked for advice. I'll just leave it.
Well if it's not excessive barking and it's before 11pm then really your neighbour is just being a pain.
Sorry that I got it wrong about your dog as I thought you meant it could go in and out as it liked all night.
You can try to teach your dog not to bark or to stop on command although I know this is not easy. As I say, my dog will bark if someone walks past the side of the garden but as soon as they are past he stops and, to be honest, I quite like the fact that he barks as it hopefully means any burglar would think twice before trying to break into my house.
If your neighbour doesn't like dogs then he is possibly going to complain about the slightest thing. He should be thankful he doesn't live close a dog that barks for hours on end. I have 2 neighbours with dogs that bark a lot, one of them sometimes almost all day and as much as I love dogs it can drive me mad. I know neighbours have complained to the council and environmental health though and nothing has ever been done. The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -
Today one of my neighbours (opposite) complained quite angrily that the puppy keeps his "teenagers awake at night", that I should "muzzle it" keep it "locked up". Due to him provoking me I retorted somewhat stupidly "would you like me to have him put to sleep". To which he replied "Yes". I walked off
Sounds like you didn't really put yourself across as a responsible adult here
It seems to me that your neighbour is well within his rights to go to bed before 11pm, without expecting to get woken up repeatedly - and not sure why he is being made to sound bad because he doesn't like dogs..not everyone does. Theres nothing like lost sleep to make people angry and fed up
OP, if your dog starts barking for two minute sessions, make him/her go in. Train your dog to stop. It IS your problem, not your neighbours
We have a dog, and there is no way I would be so blase about the dog barking its head off in the garden up to 11pm at night, disturbing my neighbours, many of which are getting up early each morning for work and some are pensioners who are in bed much earlier than 11pm
One family over the back from us, have one of those small yappy dogs and some nights leave it out in the garden late at night / early hours for extended periods - a couple of hours or so, and this dog yaps constantly until it is let back in. This dunce of a neighbour doesn't seem to think they are doing any wrong....mind you, they don't actually work for a living, so no need for them to worry about such a silly thing as sleeping at nightWith love, POSR0 -

advice or people to back up your choices?
how does it come about that 11pm is some sort of accepted cut off point?
Im up at 3-4am. Would you be happy to have dogs barking up to 11pm with that?0 -

Isn't 11pm the cut off time for noise? I agree that a dog constantly barking is very annoying but the OP says the dog barks occasionally not continuously! The world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -

I think it stems from the rules applying to sounding a car's horn (not in a built-up area after 11pm).
Sorry to hear your troubles, OP. I assume your neighbour's teenagers never make any noise at all?! Personally, unless the barking is high-volume and incessant, which it doesn't seem to be from what you say, I'm sure the dog will settle soon.
I used to have a neighbour who despised animals. One single bark (or mew from a cat) and he'd call the council. He hated children with equal venom and swore at them regularly.
Somehow, it never seemed to occur to him that practicing his electric bass guitar until the wee small hours might be a bit of an irritant to others though...
Hope you can get it sorted OK. x0 -
Only one person has mentioned what I immediately thought of on reading this thread and that is the danger of a possible fight with a fox.
Nowadays, they are becoming much bolder and the OP mentions the fox jumping a fence. Besides the danger of injury, there is also the risk of catching mange, which I believe is common among foxes, as well as such diseases as distemper. (Vaccination reduces the risk of infection, but doesn't guarantee immunity)0 -
OP - I would consider changing the "trainer" you use, I am quite serous about it. Seems to be totally clueless with the advice he/she is giving you.
I hope the dog flap is NOT for the dog to pop out and in between garden and house at night, not sure why you mentioned t and then insisted dog is "supervised" at all times?
You may say dog barks "for only 2 minutes" but if this disturbs someone's sleep - this is really no good. Person may have difficulty falling back asleep and those "only 2 minutes barking" may cause 2-3 hours less sleep for someone.
I live in a flat, my dog NEVER ever barks at night. Even my cats make no noise at night.
I am afraid that rather then getting upset with people posting in reply here - you need to do some work with your dog.
All the best0 -
