The only way to go here is demand your money back. You've already went down the route of repair, that experience has dented your confidence in their abilities and now he is offering the only other remedy, replacement. The cars you have listed are classic driveway dealer rubbish. Very low value at auction because proper traders know of the potential for come-backs so they are left for the low-lifes to buy and hope for the best. You may well have a fight on your hands, but do you want to be the proud owner of any of those alternatives for any length of time?

I don't think I would want them. Think money back is the best option.

If you're not going to have a £2kish car off this guy, what will you do?
Buy a more expensive car from elsewhere?
    Not have a car?

...or buy a similar value car from somebody else entirely?

    Don't know.

If I get money back I will save up for 3-4 months and invest in a 4k+ car.

If not I can't afford a good car short term.

Just a s likely to have a problem with a £5000 car as a £500 car. Check out the seller as much as the car.

    Update:

He's refused to exchange. So I have only one option left. Sending letter before action tomorrow

What state is the Scenic in now? Is it working or still off the road? If the dealer has repaired it and it's in working order then by all means try the letter before action, but no guarantee it will work.

It's out of action, my understanding is, hes refusing to repair or exchange.

Still within his own warranty too.

His last communication was 'forget it, come get your old car back'. Which im not doing as he might say ive accepted it back then

So ive sent a letter, after talking to consumer direct, who agreed that the SOGA id have a good probability of applying in this case. asking for a refund.

Awaiting to hear back, but think it's likely to be ignored (not a letter before action yet).

im now concerned i have sent it to the wrong address - i cant find the company number or the registered address, and its an industrial estate so difficult to work out which units are which.

anyone know a good way to check the details - would the council be able to release these?

I think the various 118 numbers tend to have business addresses. Or sometimes Google Streetview can offer up an address. Lastly, the Royal Mail may be able to help.

Check via the company name on the Companies House website.
