It isn't the cambelt, but the aux belt.

£1750 for a 9 year old car - never gonna be problem free.

Whats the interval for auxiliary belt -- 70k possibly?
Bit unlucky it snapped twice though - even if it is an easy peasy job.

If yours has done 65k miles+ then you've gotta be close to cambelt change also. Not something you actually wanna have snap.

Its a renault, its supposed to breakdown. If everyone stopped buying French cars, the AA and RAC would go out of business.

im guessing it could be the fan/aux belt (ive only had one cam belt go and that caused quite a bit of damage to the engine!) - my father in law had a scenic and he went through 3/4 belts in about 6 weeks or so..... from memory the AA guy who recovered him mentioned something about the belt had to be fitted to a certain groove on the pulley (or similar) otherwise it would loose the belt... he got rid of the car shortly after getting it replaced.

An update and thank u for the replies so far:

So option 1: exchange for another vehicle. I paid 1750. He has 3 suitable vehicles. 2 at 2295 and one at 1395. ( the lower is a Hyundai, which seems to have a fairly reliable record ). Upper two are a Mercedes a class and a Meriva.

I like the Hyundai but the dealer claims he has no cash to pay the difference. Even agreed that he would sell the renault on at around 1695! So I don't see why I shouldn't get the £300 difference. But anyway, claims no cash. ( I've spent £2237 in total on things to do with the car, some I can accept as legitimate costs, eg 2 new tyres). The dealer is offering the £1395 vehicle with some kind of 6 month insurance warranty - not sure what he's on about. Since he's probably accept £1200 or 1250 for the car from a customer I feel like it's taking the !!!! to be honest.

Option 2: I offer to take one of the two more expensive vehicles and we leave matters there, but I do not think he'd go for that. Despite agreeing to me that the renault is basically crap

Option 3: try my luck in court.

He's taking the mick with not offering the difference back. He probably paid £750 at most for it.

But there's a world of difference between a £1400 and a £2300 car from a trader. You think the Renault's rough, just wait until you see that Hyundai, one-step-from-recycling. Go for the Meriva. It's only fair to make a contribution towards the difference, but don't go the whole hog. He owes you a favour, and taking a tap on his margin won't hurt him.
Option 3: try my luck in court.

Not sure how far you'd get. He's repaired and offered an exchange.

Agree with Adrian C. May last year we bought a Kia Sedona for £1995. Dealer offered a warranty at 2k +....
When we took it to have a cambelt replaced the garage refused to touch it as it had a knock.... We returned it to the dealer who arranged for it to be investigated. Nearly a month later it was returned to us after wed had to pay another £1200 towards the cost of the work and including the replacement of the cam belt.
4 days later it went BANG when starting on the drive....
Dealer refused to do anything when we formally rejected it except take it away and attempt another repair.
We took him to court and won last week...
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

Always remember, dealers only exist to have you over. You know a dealer is lying if you can hear him speaking.

    Thanks all.

    All points taken on board.

So the Meriva, 2295. He's going to get 2k 2.1 maybe from a customer.

So offering £200 as a kind of meet in the middle sound reasonable?

Not happy at handing over more money, but rather that than another lemon.

Hyundai only really tempted me as a: actually seemed in good nick
    & b: if I could get cash difference. Since he's refusing I think it's no go. ( though I do like that it's a reliable make. ).

Going to try my luck at a straight swap, unlikely but if u don't ask u certainly don't get.

The only way to go here is demand your money back. You've already went down the route of repair, that experience has dented your confidence in their abilities and now he is offering the only other remedy, replacement. The cars you have listed are classic driveway dealer rubbish. Very low value at auction because proper traders know of the potential for come-backs so they are left for the low-lifes to buy and hope for the best. You may well have a fight on your hands, but do you want to be the proud owner of any of those alternatives for any length of time?
