Help with RAC
Hi all,
Apologies if this is in the wrong section..!
Hoping someone can help me out. I've used RAC over the past year, and in June i noticed they'd autorenewed my membership using my credit card. I'm going travelling in a month so don't need the cover anymore.
Thankfully i noticed within 14-days and so called them up and asked to cancel it. I was told i needed to send an email or letter to confirm cancellation. I sent an email via their site and was told i'd hear back within 5-days.
Nothing.
I sent another email, copying in my previous email as well. Again, i was told i'd hear back within 5-days.
Nothing.
By this point it's way past 14-days, so i called up again and after being told the usual script and me informing them i had done so, they said they'd get someone to call me back.
Nothing.
I then sent in a complaint hoping that someone higher in CS could help me. Again, i was promised someone would contact me within 5-days.
Nothing.
Last week i sent a letter via recorded delivery complaining about what was happening, and as of yet, i still haven't received anything.
It seems they're just ignoring me, so my plea to you all is what can i do?
I'm hoping, with it being paid via a credit card, i may have room to cancel it with Natwest? But by this point, it's been over 2-months..
Can anyone offer any advice? It'd be much appreciated.
Thanks,

You could try with your card issuer advising you have cancelled it but they're ignoring you - they may or may not be willing to do something.
Alternatively 8 weeks after your first complaint letter you then have the right to go to the FOS even if the insurer hasnt responded to your complaint0 -
I had a similar issue with RAC and their autorenewal insurance ( I have a thread on here) after I was unable to contact them on their rubbish telephone service to cancel it. If you cancel the payment with your bank before the payment, as I did two weeks before, then by law you are ok.
I would write to their complaints department online via their website as I did as my bank still advised me to cancel the insurance, although I'm still awaiting a reply !!0 -

Which law?
By cancelling it with your bank you are only not paying them and so you then get your insurance voided for non-payment which you must declare for LIFE on ALL classes of insurance.
Even if you do correct the error later and pay before they cancel the policy you may well have late/ missed payment fees to add.
To put it in other terms... your employer cannot just stop paying you and tell you that he thought you'd realise that they were getting rid of you because they'd stopped paying.
The correct way to deal with it is directly with the provider. If they are causing problems as per the OP then complain and take the matter to the FOS when able.0 -

No one mentioned insurance. RAC membership says to me RAC breakdown cover.
But their breakdown cover, in part at least, is insurance hence their booklet refers you to the FOS.RAC Motoring Services provides the cover under Sections A1, A2, B and C and provides the Additional Services.
RAC Insurance Limited provides the cover under Sections A3, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K and L
Hence also the split above where part is provided by Motoring Services and part is from their insurance wing.0 -

The law regarding CPA (continuous payment authority). Read this:

As long as you cancel with the credit/debit card bank you are covered, as long as you do it in advance.0 -

That is cancelling the payment authority, its not cancelling the service that is connecting to it. You are just advocating not paying for your goods/ services0 -

No I am not as I did not want their insurance and have another policy. I phoned RAC to cancel but spent 40 minutes trying to get through. The cancelling with my bank was the last resort as I could not get through the day before leaving the country for a month, but also makes the insurance void as the bank should not make the payment. Insurance companies will normally void your insurance if you don't pay!!!0 -

You didn't see this bit then:
"Keep in mind that you will still be responsible for paying any money that you owe."
You still need to cancel the renewal with the provider.0 -

I don't owe them any money as the insurance is void, as I never agreed to a CPA on my debit card when I took out the original insurance online 13 months ago. It's a scam and is obviously why HMG changed the law in 2009.0
