This is the SIM free phone I just bought for my technophobe mother. Very easy to set up - practically no features but easy to use. The clam shell ones mean you get a slightly bigger screen, but you can get candy bar type ones.

These ones from CPW are for technophobes too:

Both are Doro and cost £10/£30 on PAYG upgrade.

Grumbler, I like the look of the Doro 508, but dont quite understand this Update offer. Would I have to stay on the existing TMobile tariff that he is on now?

Tell us the model of Nokia handset that has died and someone will post a link to a 'live' one. Any SIM can be used with that phone as long as it's unlocked, or on the same network if not. I don't see any issue with using an 'old' handset if it's just for calls and texts: it just needs to be in working order.
This issue here is not finding a new handset, it's getting your husband off a crazy T-Mobile tariff that is several hundred percent more than he needs to pay. Any current PAYG SIM will do that, be it 3-123, White Mobile, giffgaff, Asda Mobile or Sainsbury Mobile. Of those, White and Asda are possibly the ones to consider, as coverage should match that of T-Mobile. The others run on different networks.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

You seem to want a new handset and a new provider - but you don't have to do both at once.

If your husband is familiar with old style nokias get him another one of those (there are several models available) - these will (probably) have the same or very similar layout of functions to his old nokia (there may be some differences but not as much as if you got a different make of basic handset).

And then, after that, review providers. As long as the phone you buy is unlocked he can use his old t-mobile sim for the time being, and get a new sim from a new provider later - at which point you can also transfer he number of his old sim (if that's what you want to do).

And even if the new phone is locked it may only cost a few quid to unlock it.

So my advice would be to find the right handset first - forget about the new provider for now. If he's a technophobe he primarily needs a handset he will understand.

Edited to add: The current range of basic nokias can be seen here: http://www.nokia.com/gb-en/phones/all/?action=catalogsearch&catalog_mode=grid&itkeyboard=on&order_by=featured

These are just their keyboard entry range - you would probably want the basics of this range - and could probably get them cheaper than the prices listed on the linked site.

    Another edit:
Here's the range at CPW - just showing nokias http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/deal-finder?filterManuf=NOK001 - you need to choose Sim-Free in the deal type box to get them displayed with the ones you might want.

Of those the 105 is cheapest - at £20 sim-free and unlocked. http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/phones/nokia-105/handset?colourCode=BLUE

It's upgrade, not update. If you qualify, they just sell you the phone at a heavily discounted price and without a compulsory topup. You can do whatever you want then as it's PAYG and the phone isn't locked to any network.

You can do it over a phone as well instead of going to a store.

I have got a Doro 506. My partner has got the Doro 508. They are almost identical but the later version has got a longer battery life.
We are pensioners but not technophobes. We like the Doro because it is very easy to use. Nice loud ring tone. Easy to key in numbers and text. Incoming calls are much easier to hear than on our other phones. Long battery life (Stand-by time 370 hours; talk time 14 hours. We dont bother to take the charger with us when on holiday. They are ideal for us and we would highly recommend them for people who just want to phone and text and dont need all the usual "bells and whistles." They are priced at £29.95, at least that is what we paid.

We also got them specifically because they are sim free. We just got two sim cards from ASDA for £1 and put them in. Calls cost us 8P a minute; pay as you go. If you go for the Asda Sim then just remember to phone up ASDA mobile and link your phone to the top up card that comes with the sim pack. You can actually do this without phoning just using the automated service on the phone (Call 2732 and follow the voice instructions).

Well, I think its going to be either the Doro sim free or the Nokia 105/6 sim free and probably White mobile, GiffGaff or Asda sim. He says he wants something that looks a bit more modern than his old Nokia 1110 ( shows how old it is ). Many thanks to everyone who helped me here, much appreciated.
