Can anyone give me some advice. My husband (a pensioner) is a technophobe and has had the same old Nokia mobile for about 10 years on a PAYG basis that he would top up with £5 about every three months. There wasn't any time limit on the credit. The phone has now died and he needs a new one. So want something similar. Absolutely basic phone, make and receive calls and texts is all that he needs and a no time limit sim. Can anyone point me in the right direction. Many thanks

See this recent thread: Which cheap basic (non smart) mobile phones are recommended?

All PAYG sims are "no time limit" if used to make a chargeable call or sending a text at least once every N month. Typical N is 6, but can be smaller for some networks.

What happened to the old sim-card? If it's still alive, it can be used with a new handset and your husband can possibly qualify for CPW's PAYG upgrade.

If he is a technophobe, why not just buy him the same old model of handset-there are plenty of old Nokia's on eBay, locked and unlocked.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

The Doro range of phones are aimed at older people who want easy to use phones - he could have a look at one of those.

Was hoping to get a cheaper sim. He has T Mobile now which is I think 35p a minute or part of minute. Have been on CPW page and have tried the upgrade checker and it wont work for me. It sends a code but when I enter it it says not valid.

You can do this in-store after checking the requirements:

'3' PAYG is the cheapest, but you need a 3g capable phone.

For other pure PAUG options (without buying bundles) see http://mobilenetworkcomparison.org.uk/compare/

If you don't want a Three compatible phone, consider White Mobile. Not quite as cheap as Three, but much cheaper than 35p per minute.

3p per minute to landlines, 6p to other mobiles, 5p for texts and free voicemail.

Calls and texts within network are completely free.

Runs on the the EE network

Thought I knew what I was looking for, but am getting confused now. Can someone put me straight please.
    Forget the old sim/phone.
I need a basic easy to use phone for an older gent who wont use it much. Doesnt need internet or fancy things, just calls and texts.
If I want to chooser my network I need a phone that is unlocked or locked to the network I choose.
If I chose White or Giff Gaff, I would need unlocked. They dont seem to have their own phones.
I need to check coverage of my area for the network I choose, I am on the South coast.
All PAYG are unlimited time wise, (call/text in 6month). I dont need a 'bundle'.
Picking a network seems ok but matching it to a phone is getting me confused.

Giffgaff do sell phones, but they are focused mainly on mobile internet and smartphones.
Tesco use the same O2 signal and Tesco Lite is cheaper for calls/texts.

All CPW's phones are not locked and can be used with any sim (the only exception are iPhones).
