3 months left on contract - can I get a new phone?

Any advice on this would be appreciated...
I have a two year contract with T-Mobile/EE that is due to end in 4 months time (so in effect I can choose to upgrade in 3 months).
Trouble is, my phone has died. Does anyone know how receptive T-Mobile are likely to be if I call them in order to get a new handset?
I don't mean a free phone or replacement, etc... - my preferred solution would be to just continue paying my current contract until it runs out, but take out a new contract right now instead of waiting to upgrade (effectively having 2 contracts for a while). I really don't want to buy/use a cheap sim-free phone for 3 months, I'd rather just go through the process of getting a good phone now.
Was tempted to just go online and apply for a new handset deal, but I'd rather speak to T-Mobile first (and may get declined if it's on the same network) and see if there's anything they suggest. Just thought I'd ask here before I call them to see if anyone has had similar issues...
Thanks

You can ask them to qualify you for an additional line, and check if you'll still be able to cancel the other contract when it runs its course0

Don't waste money on paying for two parallel contracts.
Buy a spare handset for a tenner and I am sure you can survive until you can upgrade. Or buy the handset you want and switch to sim-only or PAYG when your minimum term ends.0
