I know you can setup call forwarding on a mobile, but what is this redirection that redirects text messages to allow the hacker to get the OTP?

Call forwarding is just that, forwards calls only.

I'm guessing they maybe get a porting authorisation code and port the number to a PAYG sim? You would think the porting number would be sent to the old mobile and most people would notice if their mobile stopped working all together? Must be another way?

The banks insist on Rapport being installed because they believe it creates some sort of magically VPN direct to the bank.

And, in some cases if it's not installed they won't refund if suspected fraud is due to malware, computer issues as you've not done everything to protect yourself.

One quick question for the threatstarter, what form of PC and internet security do you use or implement?

Can you show me a case where the Ombudsman Service has ever ruled that lack of Rapport can be used to deny a fraud claim?

No bank insists on Rapport being installed. Some of them recommend you install it but it is entirely your decision whether you install it or not. You do not get disadvantaged in any way if you do not have Rapport installed.

Looks we might have a couple of (or one?) techno-freaks on this thread since all the "problems" seem to be down to one or the other more or less researched technology.

I used "eset nod32" for antivirus. It is pretty much an All In One, has file system protection and stopped something if it looked half suspicious(but not enough, it seems). Also supports Firefox, Chrome(what I have been using for the past year) and IE.

I also have this nice other tool called "Sandboxie", that can run any program in a virtual environment first to check it's authenticity(fake or virused programs will normally close instantly and try and infect). This tools can be a tad tedious to use, but it is worth it. It is just a nice tool to check files I think the AntiVirus may have missed.

You seemed to be pretty clued up with IT stuff and how fraudsters work. It's surprising how you've fallen victim to this ( if this ever happened)
And call forwarding is just call forwarding. Not text forwarding.

You're not trying to what you call "social engineer" one of us, are you?

You generally see an increase in unlikely stories on forums during school holidays. I try to treat them as a bit of entertainment.

I am very north of london. Newcastle to be precise. Believe this or not, up to you. And I don't see how school holidays have anything to do with it? Wouldn't it be a tad sad to spend my free time lying on a forum about fraud? There are clearly much better targets if that were my goal.
