i only tip in 2 restaurants because i have never had bad food or bad service and the only other person i ever tip is my barber, in my job i dont get tipped and it doesnt worry me in the slightest.
we have a minimum wage, its not great but better than what i am sure i would be on without it and I get by, it is a very amercian thing where they need tips to make up wages etc.
Personally I dont like to see it coming into fashion here in the UKmortui non mordent0 -
ISTR that restaurant owners can (could?) use tips received when calculating minimum wage eg they could pay £5/hr and if you received £0.93 in tips an hour that wasn't a breach of the rules, it was only if you didn't make that in tips they had to top up your wages to NMW0

This happens on about 99% of the time we eat out, and I would normally leave around 10% of the bill, either cash or added to the bill if I'm paying by card.
To be honest, I think people who don't leave a tip are tight. (Except if the service has been completely atrocious)
All this attempted justification about not receiving a tip in their jobs - it just highlights the meanness. You don't receive tips because you are not waiters !
If you can afford to eat out, you can afford a few extra quid for the tip.
Totally agree.
All these people saying they don't get tips in their jobs, a lot of work places operate a performance related bonus scheme. Which is essentially what a tip is.The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0 -

Yep but if I pay cash I don't get a receipt for the tip!
You could write out a slip with the amount, place, date and time, and store it with your receipts, then you'd have a paper record:Dmontyrebel wrote: »

The 'real' Jack Reacher always tips and as for you keeping financial records you malign his very name by doing so!0

I used to always tip regardless but my boyfriend is really against tipping and it makes sense - if people are paid at least the minimum wage then we shouldn't need to tip and if we didn't tip, maybe employers would raise the wage? I understand where he's coming from and there are lots of service jobs where we don't tip so why tip one and not the other? In saying all that, I generally do tip around 10% but if I think the meal is poor or if the waiting staff is dour faced the entire time then I don't tend to bother any more. My boyfriend nearly fainted when he heard I tip my hairdresser a fiver haha.Debt: Started at £4780, now at £4190
