In our town, we go to a restaurant quite frequently. There too we don't always leave tips. which I don't like. If our bill is around £20, what should we be leaving behind?

Ignoring the tip/don't tip discussion for a moment...

You've said you don't like not leaving a tip, and don't like not doing it.
So why don't you just do it? Surely at least some of time, you're the one paying the bill, so just include a tip if you want to. Would your wife really create a scene in a restaurant to stop you?

Man up and take charge! :)

I expect good service, so don't tip often. After all, it is their job!

If I get excellent service (over and above what is expected), then I am happy to tip. I will not tip just because it is "the norm".

I have worked in resturants and trust me you don't get a good wage at all.

It's often long 12 hour shifts spent on your feet ofter with no breaks becuase it's too busy. You work your butt off for little return and 9 times out of 10 people treat you as a lower form of human because you are *shock horror gasp* a WAITRESS! Apparently to some people this means that you are thick and need to be patronised at every turn.

I nearly always tip a couple of quid and if the service is excellent and the food amazing I have even tipped up to £10.

My biggest perv is massive groups of people i.e 10 plus who you have done everything for including getting their drinks saving them tips to the bar and they leave nothing not so much as a thank you.

Even on Christmas Day people hardly ever give tips and often the staff are on normal pay and have given up their day so you don't have to cook why shouldn't you tip them

Shouldnt that be something you bring up with your boss rather than expecting customers to subsidise your pay.
I work long hours for minimum wage but not in a job where tips are an option.

I also dont agree that in America they need to be tipped as the wage is so low. We were speaking to a waitress we got friendly with in Dennys, her wage is half as much again as I earn although my week is 37.5 hours, hers was 42 hours.
She did tell us that with tips she can double that most weeks.

I admit that I usually do leave a tip as its the accepted practice but dont really agree with it. If the wage and conditions are so bad that tips are needed to survive then the issue should be taken up with bosses.

Believe me I have taken it up with them at the end of the day they know they can get a million other people to do the job so if you don't like it there's the door is their entire attitude. I don't choose to work in a pub I have to as I haven't had a pay rise from my main job in 3 years but my travel and other bills still go up. I earn minium wage and then get taxed to the hilt on that and my boss knows this and knows I'm not in the postion to quit. In my sector of main employment with so many other companies making people redunant at the drop of a hat I have to stay where I am as Im in a safe postion.

Pub staff and resturant staff get a raw deal from all directions a lot of the time as well as other sectors

Basically what little tips I do get are very welcomed and I believe I work hard for them

Yes, but that's the same for millions of other people on minimum wage who don't work in a job where you can get tipped.

You must have had a raise if on MW from £5.93 in 2010 to £6.31 currently.

I didn't get a raise for 5 years in my last job, they even stopped the Christmas "bonus" of £5 to get a fish and chip supper on the last shift before shutdown.

I have had a raise on my second job but that has pretty much be wiped out by my NI and tax payments. My main job I have not had a penny all of our bonus's were stopped everything has gone

I worked 9am - 8pm Christmas Day for minium wage when we had groups of people spending £200-£300 mainly on booze then walking out with our even a thank you

If you can afford to eat out you can afford to leave someone who has given excellent customer service £1 but then that is my opinion each to their own and all that.

However I know what it's like to be on the receiving end of people who are quick enough to complain about the service and often things that are simply outside of your control but not quick enough to complement

To me, leaving a tip is the accepted practice if I've received good service - a friendly waiter/ess, who took the order accurately, and brought the food promptly, didn't leave us hanging around too long between courses, didn't leave it too long before asking if we wanted dessert or coffee, and gets the bill promptly when we are ready to pay.

This happens on about 99% of the time we eat out, and I would normally leave around 10% of the bill, either cash or added to the bill if I'm paying by card.

To be honest, I think people who don't leave a tip are tight. (Except if the service has been completely atrocious)

All this attempted justification about not receiving a tip in their jobs - it just highlights the meanness. You don't receive tips because you are not waiters !

If you can afford to eat out, you can afford a few extra quid for the tip.

I personally don't believe in tipping and I don't feel obligated to tip anyone. I don't receive tips for doing my job properly and I wouldn't expect to receive them.

Just out of curiosity.... what job do you do ?

Although to be honest I don't really like to tip that often. I like to fully receipt all spending (i'm a very sad person) and as tipping is undocumented spending it messes up my financial records.

Can't you add a column to the spread sheet for tipping?

Yep but if I pay cash I don't get a receipt for the tip!
