Rang MS about mine a few months ago- was just over 4 years since I'd bought it then I think? E74 from what I remember, MS picked it up in two days, and returned it after less than 3 weeks fixed- there's a problem with the solder on the heatsink. The guy I spoke to didn't argue with me at all- immediately asked for details and promised a repair.
If MS hadn't agreed to fix it, I'd probably have happily given it a go myself!

Why was this dragged back up form yesteryear. If miy 5 year old console had broke after 5 years of use id try and attempt it myself or bin it and buy a new 1.

Is 5 years not a reasonable amount of time considering they are still providing support and selling games for this console.
No - if they never change the design of the Xbox for the next 25 years, and keep selling games, would you think it's reasonable for the console to last that long?

After 5 years you can try but your odds are really *really* low. I'd say 5 years lifespan from a £250 console (guessing thats roughly the price paid near launch) is still pretty good.
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.
  • My console broke down twice over 5 microsoft fixed it the first time then the second time told me i was outwith the period i complained for a while at some women who refused asked to speak to the manager who listen to my argument and fixed it, microsoft also fixed my mates after a couple of years for 30 odd quid (iirc) so i would go there the xbox side is actually very helpful.

The problem is even if the claim is granted after that length of time they are allowed to give a partial refund and the value of a 5 year old xbox is practically nothing. It's better than no result at all but you'd still be paying pretty much full price for a new one.
