Thanks Denise! I had budgeted the $60 for the license and was definitely going to keep going with it regardless. I just bought YNAB too, don't like the idea of a subscription..Had a gap between my trial and starting again so have done a fresh start, and trying different way of organising categories. Not all there yet, but that's the beauty of it, being able to play around with things without losing the whole lot. I'm taking my time. Got overenthusiastic last time, and ran out of energy.

I'm not keen on the idea of a subscription either. When I bought YNAB it said that there would be free updates for life. I do hope that they do keep it updated when the nYNAB comes in.
I'll certainly be sticking with the current YNAB and not updating to a subscription based version.

To be fair, the updates to the current version are free (and for life). However, those updates/product support will end a year after the subscription-based version gets released.
So far it seems that the only thing the new version will have is Goals, and they seem a bit limited. (Only 3 ways to set/track a goal, and the red/amber/green colours are being used to signify multiple things which sounds confusing. Also, DH is colour-blind so hates red/amber/green as a visual metric.) That is not worth upgrading to me (though the end-of-life support for v4 may be).
I got YNAB4 for free in a webinar, so I'm not opposed to paying for at least a year of subscription service. I don't think YNAB really works with a subscription model, though, since there are only so many features they can roll out (given that they've said they don't intend to handle investments, retirement, etc, so what's really left once you've covered the basics of budgeting?).
We'll have to see. So far I'm skeptical (but open to being persuaded).0 -

We allocate every pound/penny to items in categories - including the things Stepchange say we can 'save' for. At the moment we don't have a huge emergency fund but this is because we appear to have to cars from hell that keep breaking down:mad: However, what is important is that I was able to use the savings for clothes, opticians etc to pay for car repairs and we never worried we didn't have funds to pay for repairs.
By allocating immediately to the savings pot and transfering from current account to separate savings account we are managing within the figures set up on our DMP. It just seems to work for us. I can't explain it any better than that - sorryDFW Nerd No. 1484 LBM 07/01/15 Debt was £95k  Now debt free and happy :j0 -
Hi all
My student licence of YNAB is about to expire. What's the cheapest way to purchase a licence?
I have looked at Steam (because I keep reading that on here) but I don't understand what Steam is / how to use it. For the first time in my life I am feeling like a thick, don't know what this internet stuff is, old age person
I can usually cope but not this time
I've attended the tutorials but not won a copy so am down to buying a licence which is fine - I just want to get the best price I can please.DFW Nerd No. 1484 LBM 07/01/15 Debt was £95k  Now debt free and happy :j0 -
YNAB is on Steam for £29.99 here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/227320/
You can also get $6 off the $60 price via a referral link, but at today's rates that's still £35.92 so Steam is probably your best bet. They used to do Black Friday sales where it was $30 but as they're releasing the new version/subscription model they're not doing any offers this year.
Here's the info on how the Steam version works: https://www.youneedabudget.com/support/article/using-ynab-on-steam It's a little more hassle than just buying directly, but you do pay yourself £5.93 for the trouble.0 -

Quick update - YNAB emailed me to advise my student licence was expiring and offered me either- 25% discount if purchasing a licence from them, or
- if I am still a student, another year's free licence
