I know this is going to sound silly, but hoovering really helps, as I generally spot / disturb any recent infiltrators of the 8 legged variety whilst moving furniture and hoovering the skirting board in the bedroom.

I find having the windows / patio doors open means more spiders can get inside.
Whoops there goes another year, there goes another pint of

Try Raid, in the red spray can, I spray it into all vents and anywhere else its safe to spray
Treat other's how you like to be treated.

My cats are brilliant spider catchers as they eat them so perhaps your daughter could let the cats loose on them?

You can get spider deterrent sprays which contain chestnut extract and oil of cloves - spiders apparently have scent sensors on their feet and will not cross the sprayed areas. I have used these sprays before, and cannot guarantee that they work, but definately noticed a reduction in the number of spiders in the house, but may have just been a quiet year for them. Spray around window and door openings, vents etc, and repeat every couple of weeks.

As for the "spider bite" incident, there are only a few resident UK spiders who will bite, and some people are acutely sensitive to them, so whilst this was a serious incident for the person concerned, it is not a regular or frequent occurrence. In fact, spiders avoid high concentrations of CO2 so would not choose to crawl over a sleeping human being who is exhaling CO2 with every breath!

Ermmmm my daughter's 2 cats are normally very good at catching any unwanted visitors but I was told those spiders are so big that both cats are scared of them

My MIL puts conkers in the corners of her rooms as this is supposed to ward off spiders. I think I might have to give it a go though I suspect my kitties will just bat the conkers all over the room.

Definitely a lot of spiders about at the moment.
  • You can use lavender essential oil as a spider repellent; the bonus is that it has a calming and relaxing effect on humans :D

If you wish to repel them from the house you could start by putting a few drops on a tissue in the middle of the house, adding more tissues a few metres away the following day and a few more metres away the day after. This may encourage the spiders to move towards the perimeter of your daughter's home, and eventually out. It's harmless to cats and cheap- get it from your local pharmacy for a couple of quid.
They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.

Lavender oil is toxic to cats - it is now believed that this applies not only to the oil applied to cats' skin but also to the inhalation of the oil.

    Thanks.

Re lavender oil - absolutely hate the smell of lavender so would nto be surprised if spiders hated it too ;)

But as is toxis to cats, not an option anyway
