Indeed. And I've done all of that. . . its just the little things - I want the little one to do up the nursery the way we want, pick the right schools, have the family settled without worrying about a S21 coming through the door. . .

Yawn...better buy now then, don`t want to miss out etc.....Y.A..W..N....and.... back to sleep.

I am just concentrating on having multiple years living expenses tucked away, with some invested, and watching it all implode ( I know you can`t take it with you, but no debt and knowing you can survive for quite a while without working is priceless, and you will probably go to the Great Forum in the Sky sooner if you are working all hours to pay a silly big mortgage?)

If it all implodes, why is having a mortgage a bad thing?

Not sure why wanting to get your kids a good eduation is so boring to Crashy, seems like a perfectly admirable and important factor to me.
Thanks In for a Penny for answering my question, I can see what you mean now.

I'm currently renting my London pad, but I have my main home and I don't have any kids and I appreciate that having nippers affects what you want/need drastically.

I would probably buy if work wasn't uncertain.

Having freedom and security are great aims. Those are goals that appeal to me too.
    and watching it all implode

None of us know what is going to happen, but I think that whatever happens in the financial world it highly likely that
    a) the population will increase
    and
    b) more people will want to live in London and the SE

The chances of prices going down in any significant way over the long term is low.

    maybe not
mature post industrial economies usually experience a decline in the working age population. these are the kind of people that tend to move out of cities. at the moment we're plugging this gap with eu migrants but its looking increasingly likely that we'll be leaving soon. the populist solution to immigration is a points based system but i think this will tend to attract the kind of people that the kind of people who want to leave the eu don't want i.e. non whites.
  • i bought a house this summer. Yes, it was expensive. I guess I'll know if I made the right decision in 25 years time.

I don't believe we'll be getting rid of immigration any time soon.
    Reducing it maybe.
But we simply don't have enough young people to support the ageing population so it's going to continue.
Obviously politicians have to make the right noises especially at election time.
