well, this is no reflection on you Hamish, but from now on will be spending my few grouts climbing Swiss mountains.
There they live in harmony as a union of three nations and don't think that is is better separate.
Apparently, they don't think that the pinnacle of their achievements over the last 1,000 years is beating their nearest and dearest neighbour in a minor battle 800 years ago.
However, whatever the result I wish only good things for the people that live in Scotland but maybe on balance better separate.
But we do need to build more houses.0 -
Why are they not in the EU when they are right in the heart of Europe?
Switzerland are a union of three population groups and speak three different languages and see no need to separate as they are a self confident forward looking people that don't think the pinnacle of achievement is a victory they had over a neighbour 800 years ago.
I have no specific knowledge of why they choose to integrate so far and no further but that's their choice.
It would certainly be odd if one part broke away claiming they wanted 'independence' and then immediately gave that independence away to the EU.
Even more odd if that one section then chose a national anthem boosting of a victory over the other part 800 years ago.0 -

Each canton has its own parliament, and have more powers than the Scottish parliament presently does. A similar federal type system would likely be the winner if it were on the ballot paper in September.0 -

I'm sure their system evolved over a long period of time: situation with Scottish and Welsh and NI parliaments have developed very quickly and is still evolving.
SNP is dedicated to separation from the English at any cost and no amount of devolved powers would have satisfied them : they already have unused tax powers.
In any event SNP want to give up all their 'independence' powers to EU asap; indeed they DEMAND entry as a right.
The only major change will be the breaking of the direct link with the English.0 -

Fair play to you, that's quite a clever punt, well done.Proudly voted remain. A global union of countries is the only way to commit global capital to the rule of law.0 -

The cantons didn't unite to form a unitary state. They kept their own parliaments and laws and churches in a confederation, later forming something more like a proper federation, but with each canton in a devo-max style situation.
They shared a common currency and army and very little else. They surrendered very few powers to the national government.
They strongly resisted integration into surrounding lands speaking the same languages. And didn't join the UN until the 21st century.
But they did form a currently ongoing currency union with their neighbour Leichtenstein.
Yep, a very interesting country we could learn a lot from. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -

But you haven't learnt from them and the SNP has made absolutely no proposals to 'cantonise' Scotland
but you do make a strong case for the 'better together' view.0 -

I've learnt from them what I need to know.
The SNP has plans for autonomy for the island groups (and in one election stood aside to allow the Orkney and Shetland Party to have a chance for power).
I don't think German Switzerland want to unite with Austria or either of them be part of Germany. I don't think Flanders wants to be part of the Netherlands. By being in the EU, Austria and Belgium end up subsidising the HE systems of their neighbours Netherlands and Germany, as student carpetbaggers freeload on thier systems. Not Switzerland as far as I know.
I would suggest the cantonisation of the UK into federal units the size of 5 million. A Devo Max setup. No foreign military adventures. Weak central government. Strong devolved units, but experience of federal democracies inside the anglosphere and northern Europe shows 5 million's a workable size.
Switzerland's achieved a governable size of state by an opposite route Britain is taking. County-size units joining for economies of scale as a national unit around 5 million in size.
In the UK there has to be devolution of parts to achieve those size of units. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -

No idea of what you are saying.
No idea of why you think units of 5 million people are special : it seems to me Europe is run by the German economic power house in their own interests and not in the interests of the smaller countries.
The Swiss cantons were virtually permanently at war until they decided to co-operate and become a union.
Thereafter they had peace and became a lot richer.
Unity was strength and gave them protection in times of trouble.
They don't have canton anthems that celebrate their historical victories over the other cantons which has to be a good thing.0
