Well, I just looked at Startrescue - hadn't heard of it before. I'd be happy enough with one car one driver cover.

However, as soon as I put in my details it quoted me £37, because my car is a 2003 model. Never mind that I keep it regularly serviced and haven't broken down for years.

And if I pick Home Start, which I would get with Auto Aid, it goes up to £55.

If your car was registered in 2009 or earlier it is £18.30 for basic cover but £35.40 with Home Start.

So fine for some, but I would still stick with Auto Aid.

You are not adding in the 15% discount with Startrescue :) it also as far as im aware covers the car whoever is driving that car

Didn't see anything about 15% discount, but that still wouldn't bring it anywhere near the Auto Aid figure for me. And it wasn't me who said it was one driver one car - that was a previous poster. I was just saying it wouldn't bother me if it was.

I just want to say thanks for posting this, mine & my hubbys breakdown recovery was Green Flag & tied in with our Car Insurance. After doing a re-vamp of our finances this year & starting a financial snowball, the Insurance Renewal came in, so I got quotes for Multicar Insurance, but the cheapest Breakdown recovery I could get was £107.06 from Green Flag.
I paid the car insurance this morning & decided to come on here to see if anyone knew of any cheap but reliable Breakdown Recovery & you lovely people have came up trumps again. Previously I was paying a total of £870.84 per year for both cars & breakdown. I am now paying £441.17 for both cars with breakdown, a saving of £429.67 per year :money:. As the saving is so significant I paid my car Insurance & the Autoaid up front & will pay hubbys in November when his is due to expire so we are also saving on the fee for the monthly direct debit :money:

I have noticed Kwik Fit now do breakdown cover, and before you laugh, its provided by Call Assist same as who provide Smart Rescue, policy seems a bit better and its cheaper £28.85 for at home and recovery, and 15% cash back makes it £24.53 per year

Another plus for Autoaid in the event of a major breakdown Autoaid will transport your car and passengers to the destination that you request, unlike Startrescue when they take the car to the nearest garage within 10 miles of the breakdown.

I just got Greenflag rescue plus for £46 plus £20 quidco cash back. The AA and RAC wanted over £100 for a similar level of cover!

I think we can all agree that we need to forget about the AA and the RAC who are now just companies like any other out to make the maximum profit for their shareholders.

Nothing wrong with that - but there are still a huge number pf peoplewho think they are a motoring club with a desire to assist the members - as it was way back many years ago.

These increases in AA & RAC prices creep up on you every year until you decide to cry enough.

Loyalty to any organization has gone done the tubes years ago so I even started swapping them around every other year to try to get the 'new member' discounts.

The 'basic' cover is not much good to us as we travel far and wide and often both in the UK and Europe.

I also not keen on companies where you pay up front for recovery or whatever and then claim it back later on your return home.

I did a trawl through the prices before I chose who to go for again this year.

The AA wanted £199 for my wife and I to have Roadside Assistance, At Home, National Recovery, and Onward Travel. That's supposed to be with 3 months free of course.

The RAC is a little better at a cost of £169 a year with an offer of £50 of free fuel.

    Green Flag would be £60

Then we need European Cover - as we're pensioners we can just about afford a couple of trips to Europe each year - so it's cheaper to have annual cover.

The AA want £160 - but offer a members discount?
    The RAC want £104
    Green Flag want £116

So what did we go for in the end?

ADAC joint membership - valid world wide - with or without your car - personal medical cover and repatriation even outside Europe - much higher level of cover than is available from any other source.

    And it costs €109 a year - around £85.

Obviously for someone who doesn't travel far from home and doesn't go outside the UK then there are cheaper alternatives - but if you have an open mind there are good deals to be had that give comprehensive cover.
