At the moment it is not here. If it even got close to being here, I'd expect to see far more hand washing, plus people walking around London wearing masks Japanese style, and possibly disposable gloves on the tube.

I bet library use would go down for a bit too, and that people would worry about dirty books transmitting germs. But that's just my own personal concern. "Have you recently returned from West Africa, sir? If so, I'm afraid the latest Alan Titchmarsh will have to wait for another day". Hopefully not a conversation I will ever need to have.

There are alsorts of things here that can be limited by hand washing.

At the moment, as NDG mentions , we have confirmed case numbers and locations only and a lot of travel. Personally, I'm happy washing my hands and practising clean ' normal' not over the top hygiene, so that should a case be confirmed here we're still in the swing of normal decent good practise. Its not as of that will cause any problems!

We certainly have the facility here to contain many outbreaks, whether there is much will to prevent them now. I wonder how many people, for example, will be more thoroughly washing hands ATM, just in case? Not many I'd guess, but i't wouldn't hurt, not with crazy stuff, just soap and water.

It may well be in Nigeria, or anywhere else that the passengers/crew from that plane have travelled to. I work in a boarding school. We have lots of Nigerian students. Yes, I will be washing my hands extra carefully, especially once term starts and I go back to work. The probability may be tiny, but the disease is so horrible, and the hand washing so little of an inconvenience, that I might as well, don't you think?

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

    Yes I do Lydia.

And you are wise to. Ebola lucky doesn't spread that easily, but, the kids might come into contact with people less conscientious. Over weekends going out and about. Activities, leisure etc. will those people be as conscientious?

I hope you students and their families remain untouched. Indeed, I hope the whole darn thing blows itself out quickly.

Seems strange the who is now launching a 100million programme etc. Surely it would have been worth spending the money a few months ago. You would hope they might have modelled this sort of scenario as well and already know the likely course.

Being a consipacy nut I wonder how much of the way the news coverage is brought to us is about expectation management.
    I think....

Ebola outbreaks in central Africa have always previously been dealt with without huge international programmes. I think the WHO have been waiting to see whether this west African outbreak was like that (but a bit worse because there's never been ebola in west Africa before so the population are both biologically more vulnerable and psychologically less clued up). That bloke on the plane into Lagos was the definitive piece of evidence that this is different from previous central African outbreaks.

I am not a conspiracy nut. I think most of the news coverage is down to the fact that if you can get people scared and then offer them information about what they're scared about then they will be more likely to click on your webpage, buy your paper or watch/listen to your programme.

They've also been quarantining and testing any Commonwealth Games athletes from the infected countries who have shown any signs of fever or anything. So far, all have tested negative and been let out again.

ALthough a fair few of them are making noises about not wanting to go home, and at least one has already vanished from the athletes' village. It always happens at any kind of similar Games held in a Western country.

I can't say I blame them. I don't think I'd want to go home now if my home was in Sierra Leone.

Even in developed nations, the negative impact would be huge, but probably more manageable.

I agree with everything apart from this point: developed countries run very lean. Supermarkets hold perhaps 24 hours worth of food and often less than that I would guess. Factories hold a couple of days-worth of parts.

If the UK (or Aus) was to close for 3 days, there'd be chaos.

    Hung up my suit!
My work colleague was at Lagos airport at the same time and is due back tomorrow. Should I shake his hand when I see him? If no further posts are made, you know why.

Just read this morning that the two wheelchair handlers of Mr Sawyer ,the guy that vomited and died at Lagos, :eek:have high fever and are under observation.

Is ths from a reputable news source or currently just an internet rumour?

It seems interesting to me that so many of the medical personnel are getting ill given that in theory the mechanism of infection is known....
    I think....
