    So they should

On my travels yesterday I saw 4 different drivers using their phones.maybe the penalty should be raised again

And if it is found they were using the phone make it the same penalty as drink driving. Taken immediately to the station and told to expect a minimum 1 year ban, hefty fine and trouble getting car insurance for 10 years.

How about while they were making manufacturers fit DRLs, they made them fit mobile phone signal blockers that switch on if the engine is running?

If they really wanted to stop people using phones in their car, they could.
Same goes with speeding, we have the technology to limit cars to the prevailing speed limit.

    Why not implement this?

They're too interested in the revenue it brings in!!

I personally would like to see a temporary ban for using a mobile phone whilst driving.

Presumably they'll just check them.... not take them. Some people wouldn't be able to find their own house if they were using it as a sat nav, say. Or need it as they're working away.

Police are quite right to gather evidence if they think a crime has been committed. Unfortunately this will be abused and just wait for the avalanche of complaints when mobiles and sat-navs start being seized automatically and going into the evidence locker for months at a time. No doubt many plod on the ground will, "misinterpret" the change and fail to simply do a two minute check to see if they could supply useful evidence in a prosecution.
  • It would only have a very limited use.

For example, it wouldn't work if there were more than one occupant.

Also, there's nothing to stop a driver dropping their phone down the nearest grid, or throwing it into a nearby field, before the police arrive.

As I say, very limited use.

Basically, it would only work in the case of a lone driver, who had been incapacitated in the accident.

Apart from the fact that mobile phone jammers are currently illegal in the UK, there are a few other problems.

How would you allow passengers to use their mobiles (which is perfectly legal) whilst preventing the driver from using theirs?

How would you stop the jamming signal from affecting pedestrians near to the car?, something which would be more of a concern with convertibles.

What if a driver wanted to use their mobile to call the police to report a crime of if they felt threatened and were not able to stop their car to do this? (something which they can legally do)?

Good in theory, but of course annoying for those who were not using their phone. How long would the phone be kept, if you are found innocent in using your phone what would happen if you are on a contract and therefore paying for a service you cannot use.

My grandmother was burgled a few years ago, her pager was found, it wasn't returned for 14 months! They then attempted to get to get it back off her as she didn't have proof of purchase.

It is a very good idea, but it needs to be well executed.

It really is horrible to see people using a mobile and driving, a member if staff at our school filmed a bus driver using his mobile with a bus full of children, it was shown to both the police and his employer, nothing was done at all.

I thought they already did this but I see the article says until now only when serious injury or death has occurred. My phone was seized when I was involved in an accident a couple of years ago, they downloaded info from it then returned it, they only had it for a few hours.

So, if i've read this right EVERY time there's a crash you should call the police...
and they will attend and take everyone's phones?
