But they can work in the holidays and they do get grants, loans and bursarys to support them.

Yes I know but I was just saying there are some situations where term-time work is prohibited.

It is possible to live on 30k in London, if I were you I would be looking at a cheaper rent and a commute. Bikes are not all that safe in London.

However, as others have pointed out, you are less likely to get any relevant and practical advice if you are less inclined to share details of your situation, financial or otherwise.

Can he go part time? Meaning he'd have time to work.
Trouble is, that would mean 6 years study rather than 3 and 6 years out of professional work and possibly much better pay?

Have you considered moving to a shared house some have rooms for couples. This would significantly reduce your out goings.

True. But it would mean he could work and study and not have to rely on one person's wage.

Oxbridge students aren't allowed to work, and a lot of unis (or courses) discourage it, but that doesn't mean it's actually prohibited.

Fwiw, DH earnt through out his time at Oxford. It was irregular work, but not hidden.

Selfish? They are young and child free, this is the perfect time to do it. And the OP doesn't seem to have a problem with it.

She's going to be carrying him for 3 years and he "won't" claim benefits?

Doesn't matter if OP minds or not, it can still be utterly selfish!

But what we don't know is if he carried her at all while she was a student. Or the level of commitment between them.
I think when I suggested she didn't mind, I assumed this was evidence that they had discussed this together as a team, he wasn't just presenting it as a fait a compli - that indeed would be preposterous. And the OP merely was looking for any extra financial help with their decision.
I would have no problem in supporting my DH in his dream after discussion: I would see it as a team decision.

Mm, in which case I'd expect to see the bloke being a bit pro active and posting for ideas, not the girlfriend? As it does read to me like she's being left to sort things out!

We'll see, if she ever comes back :)

  • What nonsense! A girl I know was doing Adult Nursing at University and she was advised to give up her two part time jobs. (She worked 10 hours over the weekend as a Housekeeper and had another job in a care home, which was bank work). She also done overtime when on holiday from Uni and still managed to gain her degree last year. It was tough at times, especially nearer the end with all her exams and all her placements… I’m sure she done 60 hours one week and a rare 23 hour shift with all her jobs and placements. But she stuck it out because she knew the £550 a month she got from the course wasn’t nearly enough to live on, especially considering she had a mortgage to pay with her partner and a car to finance. She also worked as an extra through a casting agency in various tv shows and ads whenever she could, which gave her a wee bit extra in her pocket here and there. Surely your boyfriend could find a wee ten hour part time job somewhere? Otherwise, what exactly do they expect him to live on?! Rainbows and Unicorns?
