Clue 11: Quick! Get to one of the UK’s leading racecourses for a different kind of racing, held every year in June. The pub you’re seeking is in the nearest city, which ironically hosts another annual event that sounds like it’s at the opposite end of the velocity scale!

    I'm not totally sure
, but I think this refers to the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which is held in June at Goodwood House (but not actually on the racecourse). The nearest city is Chichester which holds an annual Sloe Fair. The Green King pub in Chichester is "Trents".

Chichester is in region 17, but maybe someone can come up with an alternative answer

I can't see the relevance of Trents, but the Festival of Speed and Sloe Fair look good to me. I've been trying to get Aintree and Liverpool to work, but failed miserably. I'm going with Reg 17, thanks One-Eye.

Clue 12 Your starter for ten: Paxo’s predecessor shares his name with an aristocratic inn, part of a ‘Gallon’, that you might think offers nosebags – while its city sounds like items you’d associate with a different animal. Which city?

I have been Googling like crazy and cannot figure out this clue! I will keep thinking and post if I get any thoughts...

Update: for the 'items you'd associate with a different animal' .. Maybe Leeds??

I'd agree with Leeds. Paxo's (Jeremy Paxman) predecessor on University Challenge was Bamber Gasgoigne and there is a Hungry Horse (nosebags) pub called the Lord Gasgoigne (aristrocratic inn) in Leeds. Thanks Nicole.

Definitely the Leeds area - "part of a 'Gallon'" is a reference to the Garforth Gallon:

    From wikipedia:
Garforth has eight traditional public houses and a number of social/affiliated clubs. The pubs are Miller & Carter Steakhouse (Formerly The Old George), The Gaping Goose, The Crusader, The Podger, The Bird in Hand, The Newmarket Inn, The Miners Arms and The Lord Gascoigne. Some locals refer to these pubs as the "Garforth Gallon".

Where better to raise a glass to the Prince of Wales on the 45th anniversary of his investiture than in this pub? It rose from the rubble in 1954 and, despite its name; it’s very definitely in England – but near which city?

If you’re British in the living room, what are you in the bathroom? European!

The Caernarvon Castle is in Oxton, a very beautiful area of the Wirral, immediately next to the local landmark that is St Saviours Church. The building was built in 1954 on the same plot as the original Caernarvon Castle pub which was flattened by German bombs in the Second World War. The pub is a very attractive and modern building with beautiful hanging baskets and a large car park.

The Caernarvon Castle at Oxton, which is by Birkenhead, would not seem to be right unless considered near Liverpool, or maybe Chester, as clue says near a city.
