Given the association to Greene King the suggested answer may well be right and being probably near to probably Liverpool is what is meant.

There is an "extra" comp on twitter today: https://twitter.com/KingsRansom2014

#Win a wildcard place in our £10,000 #KingsRansom final by finding the golden key that we have hidden somewhere in the country.

Clue one:Have a gander at a map for the city granted its charter in 1897 #kingsransom #win #wildcard
    NOTTINGHAM

Clue two: Rumour has it that this is the oldest pub in the country #kingsransom #wildcard #win
    Ye Old Trip to Jerusalem

You'll need a third clue to get the precise spot, which we will post at 3pm.

    ETA:
Clue three: Ask for Karl and remind him not to dust this cursed what? #kingsransom #wildcard #win

Karl Gibson is the landlord and "The cursed galleon is a small wooden model of a ship in one the upstairs lounge. It is claimed that people who have cleaned it have all met a mysterious death. Landlords have refused to allow anyone to dust the ship over the years, allowing inches of thick grime to build up on it. The galleon is now encased in glass."

    Clue 14:

We’re not in New England, we’re in the UK. In a town that might suit for an overnight stay. Head for a pub that was once the town’s Folly. But now has a name to make big kids feel jolly. Is this where Mr McHenry drinks ale. With a dog and a rabbit, a cow and a snail? And a highly sprung creature whose name starts with Z. Got the name of the town? Now it’s time for your bed!

The Hungry Horse Magic Roundabout pub in Andover used to be called The Folly - http://www.geolocation.ws/v/W/File%3AAndover%20-Magic%20Roundabout%20-%20geograph.org.uk%20-%201779747.jpg/-/en

Mr McHenry et al are characters from the Magic Roundabout.

    So, I think, Andover in Region ?? 16 ??

Nice deduction, JessicAhh! I'd agree Andover is in region 16 - I'd say it's on the border with region 20 but we've already used that, so 16 it is. :)
Back after a very long break!
  • I used 16 so going with 20 :D

Anybody else having trouble hitting Submit today? The button seems to be 'blocked' by the images around it :(

Isn't Reg 20 the Isle of Wight? Looking at the very useful overlay map in your post 26, and identifying where the M3/A303 interchange is, imho Andover is clearly in Reg 16.

You're quite right - I meant 17, the one with Chichester in it. I've looked again and see what you mean about Andover - it's obviously further north than I thought it was!

  • I must be thick. How do you SAVE your answers. Mine haven't saved at all.
  • Thanks everyone for your hard work in posting the answers, much appreciated. Seeing as it's not been done for a while I thought I'd put all agreed answers so far in one post in case people's answers aren't saving, or for anyone just joining the competition:

    1) Edinburgh - region 3
    2) Abingdon - region 10
    3) Linlithgow - region 2
    4) Nottingham - region 7
    5) Huntingdon - region 11
    6) Welwyn Garden City - region 14
    7) Brighton - region 18
    8) Hastings - region 19
    9) London - region 15
    10) Cowes, Isle of Wight - region 20
    11) Chichester - region 17
