my daughter has her dads surname and we aren't married, although we definitely will be in the future.0

IMO children of unmarried couples should take the mothers name, then have it changed to the married name should marriage occur!
I wouldn't do this as my surname isn't even my maiden name. Depends on circumstance. Our Rainbow Twins born 17th April 2016

I AM married but never changed my surname. My boys have my surname with fathers as a middle name. We couldn't double barrel as each name has about 12 letters.0

Two children both with Dad's surname - mine requires spelling every time it is said, his doesn't. Double barrelling wouldn't have solved the problem!0

I didn't revert back to my maiden name following my divorce so share my surname with my son. My daughter has her father's name as he didn't want her to take my ex's name - seemed fair enough and works for us!0

My Son has my Surname, as it makes our happy family more complete.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

I named mine after their father.
I always felt a bit tenuous with him, and I thought it would give them identity and 'belonging' to his family as they grew.0 -

Interesting to read this, we have two granchildren, one on theway and they are giving the fathers name on birth certificate, my husband is very opposed to this andfeels they should have the mothers name if they are not married. While not as vehement as him, I do agree. School for example and you could have fourish different surnames in one family0

Be careful when it comes to being unmarried and children having British citizenship (not that this is a reason to get married obviously).
I knew nothing about this but came across it when getting my daughter her passport. I'm Australian and my husband is British but her being born here didn't automatically make her British and her citizenship only passed down to her from her dad because we're married.Mummy to two girls: October 2013 and February 20160
