Capital One worse than Wonga

I was in Lidl during this heatwave to buy some ice cream for my girls but forgot my cash, pull out a Capital One card, Lidl don't accept credit cards, rush out to an atm and withdraw £10 cash, rush back to Lidl to pick up the ice cream before it melts, it's only later when I checked the charges for a £10 cash withdraw using a Capital One card that my jaw dropped ... I was a sucker, I learned my lesson Never Again!

Q = Can I use my card to take cash out and how much will it cost?

A = Yes, you can withdraw cash using your credit card at any cash machine that displays the symbol on your card (VISA or MasterCard). We charge daily interest on cash withdrawals at your cash interest rate. You'll also be charged a fee of 3% of the amount withdrawn or £3 (whichever is greater).

Sorry you got caught out but I would have expected pretty much everyone who has a credit card knows if you withdraw cash, they hammer you.

It's not really a hidden dis-advantage of cash advances from any credit card.

I had to take a tenner out once, needed a taxi home ... like you say, lesson learnt. I've never had to do it again (made sure of it).

Yep this isn't a sneaky thing that Capital One do. Any credit card provider will charge a similar fee for withdrawing cash, not just the 'bad credit' ones.
  • That's why I still carry my debit card anywhere I go! Just for the emergency cash withdrawals..
  • I think that £3 is a small price to pay if the alternative is having disappointed girls to placate.

As I am visiting your backward country next week I must remember that I will not be able to buy my ice creams from Aldi / Lidl with my CC as I normally do ;)

    How come?
Borrowing £10 from Wonga for 46 days will cost you £12.63 in interest and charges (£10.15 for a month, £5.66 for 1 day).

Well you have learnt your lesson and you acknowledged that it is your fault.

BUT the tone from your title seems to discredit the Capital One than providing information. I am talking in general not specifically to the OP. What I have seen here some people try to discredit Banks/Lenders after their effort to recover their money because of their own fault has failed. A sort of revenge perhaps ...

Any credit card providers will do what capital one did and most people area fully aware of that.

The question here why did you use CC instead of DC to withdraw money ?
It is a fundamental knowledge of banking to know the difference between CC and DC in withdrawing money.

Another question is why you normally use cash instead of a DC.

I was going to ask about this - I've been using credits cards in Lidl for years. I know they used to not accept them, but they have been doing for a long time now. Is it only in Scotland they accept them ?
