halifax debit card.

Has anyone else had the experience of the Halifax effectively taking debit card payment only when you don't have sufficient funds in your account?
Talk talk sent me an email saying they were going to debit my card on the 4th July. At the time there were sufficient funds. My balance dropped and only when it got to below the direct debit was payable they debited my current account, on the 15th July !! It alsmost felt like they were waiting for my account to go low enough in order to deliberately cause a problem I didn't have sufifcient funds to the amount of 39p.The letter said that they would fine me £10 upto 3 times a day until my funds were full filled. The letter also said that even if my bank account shows that I have sufficient funds this may not be the case. Also any funds paid in, even if shown in my account, may take a day to proccess. It is utter madness and a complete rip off. I feel a tweet to the Halifax coming on, but has anyone else experienced a delay in having direct debit card payments made resulting in a fine?

    I guess TalkTalk didn't request the money from Halifax until a week and a half later.

    I have lots of experience of debit and credit card transactions taking a few days, sometimes weeks, to hit my accounts.

    It's not unusual.

    You mention direct debit card payments. Do you mean Direct Debit? Companies have to give notice of a Direct Debit (usually ten days). And usually say payment will be taken on or after a date.

  • direct debit. But why does this happen when my account hits the lowest point is it taken? It just seems like a scam. For 39p going over, which would cost me £30. Does that seem fair and reasonable. It could end up spiraling into a huge debt if that 30 quid is taken out and then resulting in an another fine, because they haven't processed my deposit in time and so on and so on.

    If TalkTalk told you 4th of July, but took the money 10 days later, you can try claiming back the money and the charges from your bank under the DD guarantee. Then contact TalkTalk and discuss how to pay them what you owe.

  • Thanks. The funds were put in place the same day as I realised my account only had a tenner in it. I put in 90 quid directly into the bank,. It shoed as . Straight into the bank via automatic machine. It shoed a balance of 90 qid. The sting in the tail is that the letter said, although your account may look like it has sufficient fund this may not be the case'? how can you manage you acount if the information is incoreect. \i would also like to know how what would be APR on a loan of 39p and a repayment of £30 would be for a loan over one day?? I am sorry but that is disproportionate, unfair and unreasonable. It would make payday loans sound cheap!

    I saw another post about debit cards on this forum, so thought it was OK as no one corrected that.
  • I think the point has been missed. My problem is not with the company taking the direct debit. They notified me on the 4th July and said that the payment would be taken on the 10th. Halifax decided to take the payment on the 15th, when there wasn't sufficient funds. This has happened to me bfor and it the exact same standard letter, albeit amounts ammended for each case. Hakifax reply was that ' it can take a few days in order to process the direct debit payment. I am still not satis fied with this and it just seems too convenient that payment is attempted to be paid , by the Halifax, when I don't have sufficient funds, which was 5 days after Talk talk said they were going to request payment. That is very suspect to me.

    down to you to make sure sufficient funds are in.you knew money was due to be taken regardless of when.you must know that the amount was to be taken even if weeks after.your own fault for using money already knowing it was allocated

    That would be a simplistic view. for me if they say that the money is to be taken out on a specific day, and the Halifax doesn't fulfill that obligation, and the Halifax waits, seeming deliberately, to a point when i don't have enough funds to pay, even weeks after like you said sounds like the Halifax are behaving unfairly and deliberately in order to make money from fines.

    You're being a bit paranoid if you think the Halifax did it on purpose. Direct debits don't work like that. Even if they did, it would be pretty obvious pretty quickly if banks delayed payments to collect fees.

    Your balance can often look higher than it is because payments sometimes take a while to show. For example, the shopping I did this evening doesn't show on my internet banking yet. The onus is on you to manage your money and keep track of stuff like that. APR doesn't come into it. They levying a charge/fee, not charging interest.

    There's no rip off, no underhand tactics etc. You just need to keep a better handle on your finances and so some homework on how bank accounts work.

    You might get lucky if you ring Halifax and ask them politely if they'd consider removing that charges in this occasion.
