All of the above
but we also have to mention the mog the cat by Judith Kerr series. We have all of the books and my daughter wants them read over and over again.
Another vote for Mog - although we avoided the one where Mog died - Julia Donaldson and Dr Seuss.
At around that age my DD alos loved a book called "Yummy Yummy Gulp!", but I can't find it on Amazon and just about anything with animals in it (there was one about a zoo, but can't remember the name).
Stuff like Winnie the Pooh might have a few years in it as well.0 -
You can't go wrong with Julia Donaldson. My favourite is Tyrannosaurus Drip.0

I loved We're going on a bear hunt.
The kids loved it to - it's a sing song join in chorus that changes every other page.
It's my favourite.

We got the new Julia Donaldson at the weekend and would recommend. It's called the Scarecrows Wedding.
We love Zog, The Smartest Giant in Town and A Squash and a Squeeze.
Monkey Puzzle was the favourite but we read it every night for months and months so seems to be back in the bookcase for the time being. The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0 -

Elmer - David McKee
Any Julia Donaldson but the Gruffalo ones are so common they're quite likely to have them already... I like Stick Man, Highway Rat and Zog myself (Zog in particular has a rather feisty not-stereotypical princess which I always like)
Jez Allbrough - I love Where's My Teddy for sheer daftness... or the Duck in the Truck books
My personal favourite book is Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper - the illustrations are beautiful and the level of detail in them is amazing.
'he cuddled his teddy, he huddled and hid... then a great big bear bottom sat down on the lid'
Love it!!:rotfl:0 -
My daughter liked any books with rhymes, so Dr Seuss was popular and also the old Winnie The Pooh books, 'when we were very young' and 'now we are six'
The other series she liked (and still reads at 6) is Topsy and TimSPC No 002 SPC(3) £285/£250 (4) £519.84/£500 (5) £768.32/£500 (6) £911.30/£600 (7) £913.23/£600 (8) £1184.82/£750 (9) £2864.04/£750 (10) £3846.25/£1000 (11) £1779.72/£1000 (12) £1596.55/£1000 (13) £1534.70/£1000 (14) £775.60/£1000 (15) £700.20/£1000 (16) £2081.34/£1000 (17) £1691.15/£1000 (18) £2470.95/£1000 (19) £0/£10000 -
My 3 year old loves the Julia Donaldson ones. Other favourites include mog the cat, the tiger that came to tea, we're going on a bear hunt, Mog and Meg.0

Jill murphy is another great author for this age group and for weary parents too. We like Peace at Last and Five Minutes Peace in our house best but there are loads.
Also the Blue Kangaroo series is fun as is A Cuddle for Claude
Five Minutes Peace is an amazing book! I clicked on here to suggest that.
Fred by Linda Jennings is a good book, it's about a ginger cat

If you can, I would check with the parents.
The Gruffalo, for instance is so popular that a lot of kids will already have a copy
Yes I think you're right. Possibly her older siblings will have some Julia Donaldson books already, though they probably won't have the newer ones.
I also got thinking about the Mr Men by Roger Hargreaves. She's quite a girly girl so she might like the Little Miss.. ones. I used to love the Mr Men when I was a kid, though that was before the Little Miss series came out, so I don't know if they are as good. The report button is for abusive posts, not because you don't like someone, or their opinions0 -
I would avoid the more popular ones of the last 10 years unless you can get one that's only just come out (which bumps up the price!). Some of the slightly older more classic ones are still just as good and are often overlooked, plenty of good suggestions already!
My soon-to-be-3 year old really enjoys audio books where the book is written for slightly older children. She loved the Enormous Crocodile CD in the car at the weekend, as well as Fantastic Mr Fox. She also really enjoyed one of the 'Fairy' books by Gwyneth Rees (and we do check that she's understanding them) and we're half way through the BFG, which she is understanding most of.
Another option would be to start a collection/series of books, if you're likely to buy more presents for the same child/family in future but I would personally avoid the Mr Men/Little Miss books as they're generally a bit rubbish IMO.0
