book recommendation for a young child

I'm not quite sure where to ask this, possibly it belongs on the moneysaving mums or dads boards, but maybe someone here has a young child and can advise?
I'm looking to buy a book for a soon-to-be 3 year old girl but I'm not too au fait with books for younger children. (I like getting Roald Dahl or David Walliams books for her older siblings)
I guess it would either be a really simple word book, or preferably a story book that her mum or dad can read to her at bedtime. Does anyone have any suggestions?

My 2 year old loves lift the flap type books - things like Dear Zoo, but there's an animals one she got at Christmas with loads of lifty flaps that she loves.

ANYTHING by Julia Donaldson. The Gruffalo, Gruffalo's Child - the list is endless.:rotfl:0
-
Slinky Malinki by Lynley Dodd was a big hit with my niece and nephew, at that age.0

I echo Julia Donaldson too!:rotfl:0

Ooh I've heard of the Gruffalo! Is it suitable for pre-school children? I might pop along to Waterstones and see what they've gotThe report button is for abusive posts, not because you don't like someone, or their opinions0

I too am at a bit of loss when buying books for my niece and nephew.
I was recommended to use the reviews on the Mumsnet site:
http://www.mumsnet.com/reviews/books/childrens-books?f81=318&order=HR
This is a good starting point. I just remembered the 'Tiger who came to tea' was a favourite when they went to the dentist.
Just be careful about 'We're going on a bear hunt'. Apparently it has to be read out in a particular way. My brother and sister in law only found this out when they went to the library and listened to a reading.
The other place I look is the reviews on amazon.co.uk.
Then I pick from the best of them.0 -
Each peach pear plum

Heads (hardback with pull out flaps that move things!)

Shark in the park

These were/still are all favourites of my son.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
I think Julia Donaldson has a new book out - The Scarecrows Wedding. My Grandson, who is two loves Julia Donaldson and some favourites included the Gruffalo books and also Jack and the Flum flum Tree. You really can't go wrong with these - lovely rhyming stories.:rotfl:0

The Cat in the Hat and lots more by Dr Seuss. But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Julia Donaldson's The Smartest Giant in Town. There is a song which gets 'built' as the story goes on, but as I have no idea what the tune is I made my own up! My nearly 4 year old now 'shushes' me so that she can sing it when we get to those parts. I've got her latest book on order from Amazon, but sadly wasn't available as a signed edition. I got a signed copy of her last book, and Amazon still had it at below the list price. Worth a look on Book People website as they do sell a bag of her books at an unbelievable discount - it includes Gruffalo, Smartest Giant etc - bargain!0
