You are aware that you would need to bring an action in Conneticut?

Even if they are offering a UK hotel room, charged and paid in GBP?

What about the credit card company? Would that mean we have no protection via American Express?

Yes, even though they are offering a UK hotel, the jurisdiction is determined by their terms and conditions.

You can still make a s.75 claim on an overseas transaction. I assume it was an Amex credit card and not a charge card? You would not be able to make a s.75 claim on the latter.

Could you tell us the name of the hotel/ apartments?

Yes, it was an amex credit card.

The property is think apartments tower bridge.

Realistically, I suspect we won't pursue beyond what the credit card company can do for us (if anything). They won't start any kind of dispute processing until the transaction has cleared (it hasn't yet) so we will have to decide tomorrow whether to chance them ruling in our favour or abandoning our claim.

It may also depend on whether they are acting as an agent (I can't see any T&Cs on their homepage so can't check it).

However if Priceline simply act as an agent for the hotel, OP would be taking legal action against the UK based hotel - if it came to that.

No news yet - the transaction has now shown up on the credit card statement, so the proper dispute process can begin. That can take up to 5 days though so we are still at the point of having to decide today what we think our chances are.

A friend suggested calling Trading Standards to seek their opinion, but I'm not too sure what they could offer?

Is that the same as a hotel? or something that is different from a hotel as it is not labelled as a hotel?

Trading Standards don't deal with individual consumer complaints.
