Three and EE allow limited tethering on some of their packages. Unfortunately you are a week too late as the only provider offering unlimited tethering ended that option last week.

You are still going to face the same issues regarding your steel frame.

Thanks will check out EE and Three.
I don't need unlimited tethering - its for the occasional times when I cannot access a hotspot and need to use the internet at home .

ATM the OP uses a smartphone for this, but has to use a USB cable, as wireless connection between the PC and the phone is impossible because of the steel structure. Even if MiFi device can be connected to a PC with a USB cable, I don't see any point in this as it's primarily a WiFi device and is more expensive than a dongle because of this.

Steel structures are known to block all sorts of signals, be it mobile signal or WiFi one.

Indeed a dongle can be cheaper, but is less versatile overall. Unless you can get a dongle really cheaply, I would still go for a MiFi.

I paid approx. £12 and £18(perhaps less) for my MiFi units, respectively.
You can connect extra aerials to them. You can use via USB and wirelessly. You can connect more devices to them. OP can be using it connected to a laptop inside the boat and can also pop outside with their Tablet and connect via WiFi at the same time.
So unless the Dongle was considerably less expensive, I would use a MiFi.

The issue here is the ongoing cost. As the OP seems to want to keep the phone and data bundle together in one package.

So, it seems that sticking their Smartphone on the roof is their only option.

T mobile still have a unlimited data tariff available through cpw

I'm on their £16 per month tariff reduced to £8 with 3gb I tether and haven't had any problems with fair usage

I think tethering is a problem if you constantly stream or download lots and lots

Some Mifi, and indeed some phones, allow you to attach an external aerial. that could save you having to use a tupperware box :)
