Relevant info from that document (assuming it's still current):14. ‘Best before’ dates relate to food quality, including taste, texture, aroma and appearance, whilst ‘use by’ dates relate to food safety. The ‘best before’ date is a quality indication used by the manufacturer to indicate that the food will be, assuming correct storage has been maintained, at its best before a certain date. A food which is past its ‘best before’ date should be safe to eat, but may not be at its best quality after this date.

They key here is that the store needs to demonstrate that A food which is past its ‘best before’ date should be safe to eat, but may not be at its best quality after this date.
I did not buy it, it was my mum. She said it was just marked down as clearance OOD food section. She has not opened it, but to be honest if I was her I would have just paid the £2 for the full price in date stock rather than just save a £1 for clearance jar.0 -

So your Mum knew it was out of date before she bought it.
